What if?
    #2909663 - 07/20/04 06:33 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

I was sitting in a lecture today in which the instructor was discussing the various revolts that shook Egypt in its colonial and post colonial phase, and started thinking. Even if Bush isn't the most despised president ever, in terms of approval ratings or whatever, he is at least the one who has evoked the strongest dislike in those not for him that I can think of.

Many people seem to be assuming, for the sake of their continued sanity or whatever other reason, that he definately won't get re-elected. What if he does? What will happen at the news that a figure whom a significant portion of the populace _hates_ is elected and inaugurated into a second term? Mass demonstrations? Riots? Civil Disobedience? It seems to me that a president's job would be unteneble if there was a mass demonstration of distrust and distaste, maybe a nationwide walk out of schools and jobs at a particular time... it need not be anything much... seeing 30 or 40% of the voting population simply assemble in the streets for 5 minutes to show their disapproval would send an unbelievable global message.

Thoughts?

when bush stole the office the first time, they had to cancel his limo parade through DC that every president gets.. because people were throwing eggs and shit at the cars. Bush was the first president in US history to have to cancel his victory lap or whatever it is. I can't imagine what it would be like if he stole it again.

I'm betting he wins. Anyone have  $100 they want to lose? :smirk:

As for what will happen: I can't say...I'm not an American. I fear that nothing will happen...which may turn out to be the worst case scenario of all.

There will probably continue to be large demonstrations, especially as he leads us into more wars financed with borrowed money, thus pushing us further into debt. I'm not so sure an actual revolution would occur, but if there was, I'd be on the front lines.

In a situation like this, some politicians might voluntarily decide to step down, asking their party to nominate a different candidate -- (a la Lyndon Johnson).

Or, their party might put pressure on them to step down, and put up an alternate candidate at the party's convention. In this situation, the Republican Party has made the decision they are better off sticking with Bush than trying to run someone else against Kerry.

I can't see any of the scenarios you describe being very likely if Bush gets re-elected, particularly since the likelihood of any electoral votes being decided by as little as 537 votes this time is small.

By "decided" you mean "ordered by the supreme court", right? :smirk:

No way a liberal like Kerry gets elected. He is the most Liberal senator in Congress. Name the last liberal we elected. Bush will win in a walk.

You don't see mass demonstrations in the street today, and you won't see them when Bush gets reelected. Or as you would have it, reselected.

RESELECT GOVERNOR BUSH!

Anyone got a SORE-LOSERMAN bumper sticker left?

Carter--not the last Democrat but the one before that (i.e. not that long ago). anyway, the point is that he's running against a terrible president so he has a good shot just by his 'I'm-not-Bush' tactic. Not that internet predictions are worth a salt, but Kerry will win by a significant (not landslide, not 2000) margin.

I heard the thing about cancelling his victory lap from a friend when I was discussing it earlier. Pretty funny  I would imagine that that'll happen at least, although to a much greater extent. After all, the people then were the die hards who hated him from the beginning, before he made any decisions... now, there'll probably be 10 times as many.

Jimmy Carter was a conservative southern democrat. Just because some of his policies were a disaster doesn't make him a liberal, even though I would like it that way. You didn't see Jimmy Carter pushing any great society programs. He wanted to cut the tax code and balance the budget.

We haven't had a liberal elected since the 60s. Voters don't like liberals. Liberals don't even like to call themselves liberals anymore because of the shame. They have tried to switch themselves to "Progressives". How pathetic! John Kerry is the most liberal member of the Senate. Do you hear him takeing pride in calling himself a liberal? Hell no. John Kerry came out of the New Left era of Liberals. He is truely one of a dying breed. I couldn't have possibly picked a worse candidate for President in the Democratic party. People don't like voting for liberals, and John Kerry will lose.

At least Al "Tawana Brawley" Sharpton would have provided comic relief.

Bush and Kerry....what a shitty choice.

Bush has fucked up a lot of stuff and I doubt his intellect. What
comes out of a person's mouth is indicative of what is going on in
their head. I'm sure everyone here has witnessed his poor talking
skills.

Kerry is a liberal, but he seems smart. He knows that overly liberal
politicians are despised by most of the "rank and file" America.
In my opinion, if he wants to win he must flirt with the Left, but
not actually enact any of their policies(much like Bush flirts with
the religious Right but does not really pursue their agenda whole-
heartedly). He must make half-hearted pandering attempts to the
Left, but more importantly he must appeal to the Center. That's
my two cents.

Both candidates suck in my opinion, but I will probably be voting
for Kerry.

What most people seem to agree upon is the fact that we need better candidates. It would be great if they had a separate box on the ballot to check that simply said: I believe that both candidates blow chunks.

You, my friend, are a bit of a goober.

I don't think you quite understand Frank's mind. He was a champion of free speech but didn't necessarily expect to be paid for it, he tolerated no drug use at all in his band and he despised unions and hipocrits and freeloaders. I think he is a sorely missed hero as well but diplomat?????? From Freak Out....."sometimes he shows up. Sometimes there's trouble." He most certainly was not the shit eating buffoon most people thought. I don't know where you think my positions differ. And further, fuck, the music was great. Even if he was an idiot (and he wasn't) he could play guitar like an angel
