Taking Tape Off of Holes (Question)
    #2908696 - 07/20/04 03:47 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

In one post, the writer said that it is a good idea to take the tape off of the holes (PF Tek) a couple of days after the initial inoculation. I have tried to find more material giving opinions on this matter and can't find any. I am wondering if anyone else believes this to be sound advice. I had good success preparing my substrate, and innoculation my jars. None of them appear to be contaminated. And they are colonizing...but they are colonizing pretty darn slow. So I am wondering if the matter with the tape might be helpful. Thanks.

Shoney

Do you have a dry verm layer? Hopefully....like doc said take it off, i would take it off after they are colonized about 50%....or better yet use tyvek next time

I have a layer of dry vermiculite on the top. Man, this place is great, I only posted a few minutes ago. Thanks so much. Ciao for now.

Not sound advice and whoever started that one has stalled far to many jars! Foolish reasoning to say the least. It was as far as I can assume to keep water from entering the jar, which BTW foil or NOT letting your PC over giggle (if using a weight) which causes excess boiling, boilovers, and premature water loss, will take care of. Forget the Tyvek filter in the lid it's really just a waste of your time plain and simple verm layer will do ya just fine bro! GL

Oh really?Would you care to elaborate as to why you have come to this conclusion?

(Redundancy?)I use Tyvek in jars of grains as well as many other places but with the PFTek the verm layer is your layer of protection doc, save your filter disks for somewhere where they'll be more effective  we're talking PFTek doc I say this with all respect also  take care doc :peace:

Taking Tape Off of Holes (Question) [Re: hyphae]

I read in the gas exchange FAQ, that it was better to wait until there is growth, to take off the tape and loosen the lids,(In order to maintain the moisture) Is this correct?

really, you shouldn't be keeping these things where they will be able to lose very much moisture and even if they do, in a properly incubated setup you should be colonizing fast enough such that a little evaporation won't halt the whole process.

if you're afraid of contams, but want to take the tape off, try coffee
filters or tyvek as an added layer of defense.

some say it's redundant, but better safe than sorry!

True to a point #1 RH should be maintained and is of little concern at this stage. It really depends on the size of your holes.

I took the tape off the same night that I put this my original post up (about two days ago) and I have had as much growth in that time as I had in the whoe prior two weeks (literally). They look really good also, the mycelium has little root-like looking structures spreading like mad. I think now I am on track with a good two to three week colonization period. Time will tell of course, but I think things are looking pretty good now. Thanks for the tips.

Shoney
