question about casings & humidity
    #2906467 - 07/19/04 09:15 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

A friend of a friend is doing a casing right now. I was wondering if it would be better for him to put it in the terarrium w/ wet perlite or to just leave it be. I've heard the casing creates it's own moisture but would it be better or worse to give it extra moisture through the perlite layer? Keep in mind the casing will be in a seperate container inside the container w/ the perlite layer.

ok...

I have a 50/50 casing in a small container inside a big rummermaid with a wet perlite layer. Would i get better results if i took the wet perlite layer out and let the casing create its own humidity? Or would i get better results if i just leave it in there with the wet perlite layer?

Mist the casing? I've heard everywhere not to do that. Why would i need to add more humidity if i already have a big perlite layer and the casing itself? Anyways thanks for the info!

When you fan the chamber on a regular basis, which is necessary if you want a good pinset, you will be pushing out the humid air and introducing the probably much drier air that is in the room. Now when you put the lid back on the chamber the air inside will begin to wick moisture from any source available. This means that the condensation, the perlite ,and your casing will begin to contribute moisture to the drier air. This means that your casing will slowly begin to dry out, hence the need for periodic misting of the casing layer in order to maintain peak moisture content in preperation for the oncoming pinset to feed from.

After some experience you will learn to get a feel for when and how much to mist the casing itself. The ill effects of direct misting that you mentioned arent really a factor until the onset of pinning,at which time direct misting will result in a higher abort rate and a lower overall yield. Having said this you understand that the best thing you can do is have the casing layer at optimum moisture levels before the onset of pinning so that the humid environment created by the perlite and misting the sides of the container will slow the dessication of the casing and leave the available moisture within it to the fruits and not the air. You should be careful, however, not to over saturate the casing as it will invite early contamination as well as promote the rotting of any early aborts.

I hope this answers your question.
Good Luck!
MYKEY

People say not to mist casings directly is BS. You want to build up the casing to near saturation prior to initial pinsetting then induce fruiting by using your pin triggers; temp drop, FAE (fresh air exchange), light are the major triggers. Ya know what here is a little something I wrote to help the newbies out in this area:  here this is good reading for everyone!
