Is marrage a religious or secular event?
    #2906052 - 07/19/04 04:45 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

This is someting I have been thinking about for some time. If marrage is a religious event than the first amendment precludes the government from making laws that would effect it. If it is a secular event that what does religion care?

Some would say that it is both a religious and secular event. History shows that it is and has been a secular event. Marrage "Contracts" have been around sense the early part of the 2nd density of Egypt. Through Egyptian, Greek, and Roman times it was a secular event. This event required witnesses to sign the contract that then became binding. If you ever read the contracts many outline the jobs and responsibilities of the parties. What each party is bringing to the table and what the grounds are to make the contract null and void.

I personally think that going back to these contracts as they would solve a lot of problems.
Is marrage a religious or secular event?

A wedding is usually a religious event. A marriage is a contract between two people.

where's the both option?

there's religious AND secular elements to a marriage.

marriage, from the government's perspective is
strictly a secular, legal matter.

the church, on the otherhand, their perspectivve
is strictly a religious, non legal matter.

the problem arises when politicians seek to weigh
decisions along with the religious connotations
and, likewise, when the religious folks try to bring
their religious point of view to bear on secular
matters.

It is a religious and/or social contract. It should not involve the government in any way.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis

"I would rather be exposed to the inconveniencies attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it." - Thomas Jefferson

Other than to ensure that all people that enter into the contract have equal rights under the law.
