problem: mini-mushrooms
    #2903994 - 07/19/04 12:42 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I've been having a problem with my little ones as of late. This time i cased them in an aluminum foil bread pan and put that inside of a clear baking bag, a cheap humidity hood if you will. Anyway They got put in the basement where it is around sixty eight degrees all the time. I was getting good myc. growth and everything but when they started popping up they would get no bigger than three inches before the veil broke and the cap opened. I got quite a few of them, but once dried out they don't amount to much. I'm using Treasure Coast and they are coming from prints I made a few months ago (with standard size shrooms). I'm not sure if it's the temp, or maybe the amount of water they were receiving or the humidity levels down there. But from past experiences it should have gone well. Another question, will the amount of water dictate in some way the size of the mushrooms? thanks for any help.

yea sounds to me to be a bit low in the temp area. might wanna try raising that temp a bit somehow.

Yes, water is important to size, as is air exchange and temps.

If it is a closed bag they might need more fresh air. Right? ask the pros tho

in my foaf's experience cooler temps produce small potent fruits and warmer temps produce larger less potent fruits about 70 degrees seems optimal to him

they do get aired out about twice a day when i water them. as far as the substrate goes, i bought this bag of organic potting soil that looked pretty moist to begin with. i put about a half inch to an inch on the bottom, layer that with my crumbled myc and then cover with the same potting soil to just cover the myc. i tried using vermaculite and perlite on the bottom once, but I think that made it go bad much faster than when i didn't use them. I do have a heating bad that i could put under the growing box to up the temp, it would then probably stay around seventyish. they are getting indirect sunlight from two windows and a glass door all day, and no light during the night hours. that's pretty much the setup right now.

To get the larger fruits you are after you will need to bring the temps up to around 70-75degf. Make sure you are fanning regularly and go with a substrate that is at least 2" deep with around a half inch of casing material.

Just my 2 cents!
