An E-Mail I Got - Iraq and Arab related
    #2903595 - 07/18/04 08:09 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Quote:

I am not condoning what happened to the Iraqi prisoners... however, I think it is vitally important that, in my head, I have these matters in proper perspective...

* Saddam had Iraqi men, women and children put to death,
in human meat grinders, on a daily basis...
NO OUTCRY FROM THE IRAQI PEOPLE
OR THE ARAB COMMUNITY...

*Saddam had people thrown off of 3 - 4 story buildings,
while their relatives were forced to watch...
NO OUTCRY FROM THE IRAQI PEOPLE
OR THE ARAB COMMUNITY...

* Saddam had people's tongues cut out, limbs chopped off
and even beheaded, while their families were forced to watch...
NO OUTCRY FROM THE IRAQI PEOPLE
OR THE ARAB COMMUNITY...

* Saddam's sons, as well as other administrators and military
personnel, raped and sodomized Iraqi girls - some as young
as 8 years old - on a daily basis...
NO OUTCRY FROM THE IRAQI PEOPLE
OR THE ARAB COMMUNITY...

* Saddam's regime indiscriminately put to death millions
of Iraqi citizens, on a daily basis, during the term of his
brutal dictatorship, as evidenced by the mass graves
recently uncovered, in various parts of Iraq...
NO OUTCRY FROM THE IRAQI PEOPLE
OR THE ARAB COMMUNITY...

* Terrorists recently exploded several car bombs in Baghdad,
killing 17 innocent Iraqi children and several dozen innocent
Iraqi citizens...
NO OUTCRY FROM THE IRAQI PEOPLE
OR THE ARAB COMMUNITY...

* Terrorists have been killing American/Coalition soldiers,
on a daily basis, since we sent our troops (many of whom
gave their lives on Iraqi soil) and used US taxpayer dollars
to liberate the Iraqi people...
NO OUTCRY FROM THE IRAQI PEOPLE
OR THE ARAB COMMUNITY...

* Four Americans were killed in Fallujah. Their bodies were burned,
mutilated, dragged through the streets and hung
on a bridge, while Iraqi people cheered and stoned them...
NO OUTCRY FROM THE IRAQI PEOPLE
OR THE ARAB COMMUNITY...

AND NOW...
A few Iraqi prisoners have been humiliated (poor babies)...
A pair of women's underwear was put on their heads...
A few naked photographs were taken...
AND THE IRAQI PEOPLE GO BALLISTIC...
ALONG WITH THE ENTIRE ARAB COMMUNITY...
GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

As said, I don't condone what happened to the prisoners, but, until the Iraqi people and the Arab Community, as a whole, get their act together... WE ARE AT WAR!

AND I DON'T WANT MY PRESIDENT TO APOLOGIZE TO THE ARABS FOR ANYTHING!

If you agree, you might want to forward this.

what do you think?

I agree

Seems obvious to me

Any culture/civilization that keeps half the population (women) subjugated and treated as property doesnt deserve to be listened too when human rights are the subject.

well duh they can't cry out lest they be shot or have their families killed. Its funny how 100% of the people voted for Saddam during their elections. I bet there was a pile of bodies buried behind every voting center.

I agree MeatLog

Although there are huge Arab communities in many westen countries, and while there was some "outcry" the majority, unfortunately, were/are silent

I think its not cool to be conservative and young. By nature the youth are rebellious...they will rebel against anything...I know when i was a teen i rebelled like crazy...

I wouldn't say I'm heartless, but I try to think of the world in reality terms instead of the ideal world image.

The Iraqi people lived under a harsh dictatorship with a completely state-run media..there would be no chance for any outcry. I expect any outcry that started was quickly put out.

Comparing crimes to the crimes of others doesn't make your crimes any "better". Saddam committed terrible acts, far worse than the "torture" of the Iraqi prisoners...but that does not excuse the torture in any way.

But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

Thats why those who did it are being punished, why must this drag on and on.

trendal, you're right. nothing excuses a crime like torture. you can not reach equality between crimes.
but there is a huge difference when something is condoned by 'people in charge' and when it's not.

no one is excusing the petty torture.

Any culture that has the death penalty shouldn't be allowed to disagree with the beheadings of their citizens

Don't agree? It makes as much sense as what you posted. You may think the entire "Arab community" is one and alike, but there are people over there who disagree with what goes on, just as there are everywhere, and would try to change it. Notice how many of them are killed. Many who oppose the government and its doing, or oppose the fanatics, are jailed or killed, and you wonder why it seems the majority of the people over there don't/ can't do much anymore?

Not that America should intervene, it's up to the Arab people to find a way to change what goes on, not the Americans

The Arabs could have done little to stop Saddam. However, the persecution of the Kurds and the torture of Saddam's political enemies (among other things) was one of a whole range of reasons for going to war. The main one was that Saddam was a threat to world peace. Which was false.

And there were outcries, at least where I am there were. Just as there are outcries over human rights abuses in Uzbekistan and much of Afica, among others.

I'm not against the Iraq war, btw, I'm an agnostic.
