Purchasing cottonseed hulls?
    #2900691 - 07/17/04 09:13 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I was just wondering if anyone knew a good source to buy cottonseed hulls? I ran a search but it just led me to broken links and bad sources.

Find a feed store in your area, a lot of them carry them, Agway is where I bought mine. It came in a 45lb bag. If they don't carry them they will probably be able to order them as the are used as a feed supplement, good luck.

Cottonseed meal is an organic fertilizer. The meal is the waste product from making cottonseed oil. You might have a hard time finding it if you do not live in cotton-land. You may be better off checking the USDA and finding out what crops grow locally and use waste products from those crops.

I'll try to find a feed store in my area, otherwise I'll do some searching online.. my interest was sparked when I got the cultures from you on the hull.

Yidaki, I am able to get cottonseed meal, but am looking just for the hulls.

along the same lines... i'm wondering about good sources for rice hulls.

"Growing Shiitake Commercially" (Bob Harris) recommends using rice hulls as an inert, insulating filler for indoor log incubation boxes.

They are sold by companies selling drilling rig mud additives. They (cottonseed hulls) are mixed into the drilling mud to raise its viscosity. They generally sell 100 lb gunny sacks full for about $3-4.

Good luck!

I have also read that shredded beet pulp makes a good substrate too (reusing organic goods for cultivation)..

oh if it helps anyone, found this link with a listing of feed stores in the US..

http://www.polocenter.com/health/feedus.htm

I called one of the places in my area, and they helped me get the phone numbers of other feed stores closer to me that weren't listed at the above website, as well as get the numbers of the local horse stables for dung

Cool link there one store that's listed that's closer than the one I go to now. I'm going to check out the drilling supplies that millet suggested also.

A lot of things grow really well on these hulls, so far I've only fruited oysters and poplar mushrooms on the hulls alone. I've mixed them with sawdust and wood chips and grew reishi. I think they make a pretty good supplent for other stuff.

I don't think think the two are quite the same, wheat bran contains like 3 times more nitrogen. The hulls make a nice additive for improving the the texture of sawdust. i couldn't find a link for the percentage of N for the two, I think cottonseed hulls are 2 percent and wheat bran 6 percent.
