That was the branch of the gov who grounded all commercial air traffic on 9/11, was it not?

Yes it was. I don't understand what that has to do with the flights taking the bin Laden family out of the US, though.

Oh I see, it was six "chartered" flights. Does the FAA have control over private flights as well as commercial? Did they only close airports to commercial traffic?

The FAA has control over both. I am still unable to grasp your point, though. Help me out here. What am I missing?

I thought it was obvious...I said it was scary that he would have the authority to overrule an act of the FAA. I don't see why the president's counter-terrorism chief would have this authority.

If you think he should I'd like an explanation, as I am obviously lacking one...

Who said he overruled an act of the FAA? Source, please.

Earlier in the thread, pinky. The point was made that it was not Bush himself who gave the order to allow the bin Laden's and other Saudi's out of the country by air, it was Clark.

If the FAA had grounded all the air traffic in the US, would you not consider an order to allow several flights to take place as overruling the FAA's orders?

Yes I would.

However, those flights took place after the FAA's restrictions were lifted. The bin Laden flight for example departed September 20, 2001. Why on earth do you believe otherwise? What is your source?

Look, Clark's involvement had nothing to do with whether or not the flights could take off, it had to do with whether or not the specific passengers (i.e. Saudis) on those flights had been investigated sufficiently to ascertain that they could not be held as either suspects or material witnesses. The 9/11 Commission felt that Clark's decision was acceptable. The Saudis on those flights had been checked out by the FBI.

I've heard various dates. September 20 is the latest (from you), and september 14th is the earliest. The Boston Globe reported that two flights bound for Saudi Arabia left on the 18th and 19th of Setpember. Moore showed a "document" in his 9/11 flick with dates of sept 13th for a page of passengers, but we can't trust that... When did the FAA lift the ban?

Where's your source that they left on the 20th?

September 13th, so either way you're right: it has nothing to do with allowing the "flights", and must mean they had cleared all the passengers.
