A couple finds

The real mushroom season is just about to get underway here in Colorado. It was raining like crazy yesterday when I went up and looked around to see how things are.

First, here's a nice specimen of Calbovista subsculpta, the most common of the larger puffballs here at higher altitude. They are edible.

The other find is a slime mold, simlar in appearance to Fuligo septica, although I won't bet that it actually is that species. This specimen is about 2 feet across and an inch thick! It had about the same consistency as meringue, discovered by poking it with a finger.

Happy mushrooming!
