I have been reading alot about poppies and have been pondering growing some. I know that poppies such as; Argemone mexicana & Eschscholzia californica are legal to grow...so the question is: Can I legally grow some Papaver somniferum? Oviously bleeding/harvesting poppies would be illegal. Peace.

Its a grey area really. But YES it is legal to grow. In fact, Major seed distributors like Burpee seed company sell opium poppy seeds TO GROW. They even mention in their catalog "this species is grown especially for its low morphine content" hahaha. If it looks like your going to use them as a drug then you may get harrassed but the fact is , its unlikely. I dont believe there have been too many people prosecuted for it. Besides.. You could say you bought some Orientalis seeds from walmart and this is what came up.. This can be a good alliby if it comes up in court because they will have to get some botanists to identify it .. (ok im starting to not make sense.. late and doped..)
so yes.. grow grow grow.. just dont harvest.
(im sure that in some states their individual law may state that it is illegal to grow, but still the likelihood of getting busted isn't too high)

There are 2 times of year in which you can plant.
Spring, and Fall.
However since poppies drop thier seeds NATUALLY at around the end of summer/fall. You can plant early, like the end of august, or even earlier.
when it comes to guerilla style planting.....if it doesnt rain, all you have done is set things up.
Spring planted poppies mature in the summer, while fall planted poppies grow durring winter....srping and then bloom in the summer.
Some people do both(i.e. sow in spring and fall )
Some say that fall planted plants are better..... but a spring planted plant is quite nice to. (sip.....sip.......sip )
BUT ITS NOT SRPING(righ now), so get out there with your seeds and go sow ....sow .....SOW (mid august is okay, but early september(IMO) is perfect, on the west coast) but if its dry planting early just means less work later, and the west coast seems dry this year, keep your fingers crossed for a nice and wet mushroom season this fall people.

start them now they need cool weather to germinate I've had them sprout 34-60's although if it's too warm they won't germinate as easily.

Depends on where you live, but in most places it's a little late. I think you can still get a decent grow now, you'll just have to water like a madman when the temps get really high. If not, try again in late August, haha.

Seeds are legal. You may be able to get them going still depends on you zone. Next time start a new thread. No need getting all Jesus about it.
