Growing around Kids
    #2897933 - 07/16/04 05:56 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

I was wondering if any of you cultivators have kids? I have a 5 year old boy and i was wondering if you guys openly discussed growing mushrooms with your kids or if you try to hide it from them? I find it hard to hide what im doing from my son so i told him i was trying to grow portabella mushrooms. Ofcourse my wife is against anything i do so im not even going to touch that subject  :crazy2:

depends on how old the kid is. anything less than 18 and they might not be able to handle it i.e. they might think it is wrong or blab their mouths off. i don't think it is a good idea to discuss growing mushrooms with anybody unless you live where they are legal to grow.

I've a nine year old daughter who knows
daddy has some weird fancination with shrooms
so much so she draws me pics with shrooms on
them, comes running up to me in shops with shroom
ornaments ect ect.
I've a pc\spare room with over 30 glass and ornamental
shrooms, paintings and all sorts so she knows daddy
loves shooms and not prostitutes, beer or any other
vice that will wreck our family life, thats my justification.
I dont do my jars, glovebox, ect in front of her, i keep
all my spores ect all locked away. My growtank sits
on the windows ledge in toilet in my own bedroom, she
knows it's there but shows no interest in it.
Keep you drying and all other operations out of site,
what about a spare cuboard? fit a light ect build up a
stash then grow every so often to rebuild your stash.
Someone suggested to me buying some edible type shrroms,
let her see them grow and maybe she'll get bored and
never bother me again, i never tried it but maybe i will.

The building up a stash is best for me.

never let them see a syringe, thats got to be NO 1 on your
list

Sortof along the same lines of thought, I know of someone who takes their 10 year old daughter with them when they shroom hunt. She'll find a big cluster of huge cubes and come running up to give them to her daddy. All she knows is that daddy likes to collect them and she has been told not to eat them. When ever I go hunting with this guy I feel weird about have a kid with us. I imagine that getting caught and having a small child with us would be very damning. We don't have to tresspass to hunt and that makes me feel a little better though.

IF i were living away from this society, i would teach my kids all about the sacred mushroom....

But in this society there are people that dont want this, and will give their lives to stop it.

peace and love

just be carefull.

I totally disagree about introducing my children to mushrooms.... You must understand that not all people are meant to experience psychadelics as we do. If they discover this fruit out for themselves then I will certainly guide them in understanding the experience and safely using but in no way shape or form will I Never say "try this hun." or... "You want to have some fun, get your hands on some shrooms." We here at the shroomery are psychonauts and the affect shrooms have on our minds-bodies-soul etc has been beneficial which is why we are all probably here fascinated with them.... but adverse reactions in ones who are not meant to tingle with this powerful drug are a very real possibility. Lets just remember that society is a totally differnt world that the community we have here and even though my children may come from me, they are NOT me.

If I were growing around kids, I would grow edibles as well, and tell them NOT to eat the trippy ones, because they are not edible, just an experiment, but that we can eat the "food" ones.

I do take my kids mushroom hunting all the time- they LOVE it! What is wrong with taking kids hunting? Kids adore that stuff. We find edibles, and non-edibles and try to identify them all. My 5 year old is the same as Scotsman's daughter, always getting excited when she sees mushrooms. Like her mama!

Awwwwwww, you are sweet!  Yes, we do a lot of frolicking, gasping, cooing and exclaiming over the sweet little things! It is the best thing to do with kids, they appreciate the magic! And we look for fairies and gnomes too, at the same time.

I really can't wait to have kids...I'm way too young to even want them right now, but I am a sad sappy sucker when it comes to babies...and puppies, for that matter. God. I'm such a girl.

The main problem is the fact that its illegal. Little kids tend to open their mouths about things...

And I know I never wanna see my kid eating shrooms...

I think that if you have to lie to a 5 year old about what you are doing, then what you are doing must be wrong.
If you truely think there is nothing wrong with what you are doing, then you would just explain what they are, and explain that they are not for children, and to stay away from them. I'd say: "Theyre Icky" keep them in a safe spot, away from the kid, and never bring it up again.

That's also a lie.

You dont' tell a five year old your having sex you don't tell them you smoke pot. You lie about it. They are too young to understand, appricate or disaprove. You shouldn't tell them everything just because they are your children. The important thing is keeping them and yourself safe.

This is a great thread.

We're gonna grow some edibles, and display there different stages of growth.

Im planning (once i get my presentation figured out) to get along to a local school and volunteer to do a mushroom growing workshop with the older kids
Open their eyes to the wonders of the fungal world

Its true the biggest worry is that kids dont have a concept of the strange world of adult taboos
They are still so innocent and (rightly) cant see the logic in a poor mushroom being wrong. This is all conditioned

I used to go picking with my parents when i was 5. thyed go to the pine forest with friends on walks and id collect ferns and mosses and parrot feathers. I never knew they were collecting shrooms til much much later
I think its important that you dont lie to them, but for your sake that you dont tell them everything either. I mean lying to our own children? thats no example to set

If you grow shrooms then buy a FP or sporeworks kit and sent them to school with it for show and tell.
If you cant hide the fact you grow shrooms then come out about it openly - but only with the edibles of course.
Some of the worst criminals get away by also being pillars of the community - what were doing does no one any harm but you can spruke some good community relations by helping normalising mushroom growing as an urban hobby. People are only suspect because they fear the unknown
And if its all too hard then maybe give up cubes and get into outdoor cultivation of cyanescens/ azures / subs etc which is reallly easy in the right climates

I hide it from them, although I wish I didn't have to. Little kids have trouble keeping secrets, and sometimes they get angry at you and don't know where to draw the line. (ie screaming "My daddy does drugs" in the middle of Walmart for not buying him that new toy).

Ideally, it wouldn't be illegal to grow pot or shrooms for personal use, but there is still a long way to go with those law changes.

The rules should be no different than keeping booze from kids... keep it out of reach, and if they're big enough, keep it under lock and key. Sure they'll eventually be curious and want to try it, and when they're 18 they can do whatever they want legally.

One thing that I will do different than the way I grew up, is to not demonize drugs, but encourage proper education. Most people who do their research know what to stay away from. It's when kids/young adults are introduced to drugs by their friends with no idea how addictive or damaging a drug is that you get 15 year old haroine addicts.

If i ever have kids then i will tell them every thing at 13 or 14, at that stage im gonna buy them alcohol, buy them a cell phone and tell them to phone me if anythng goes wrong.

But i will educate the shit out of them, and what drugs to stay away from.

I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure my kids (if I have any) dont use any drugs at all, and if they do (and most people experiment) I will make it a not-so-good experience, and hope they realise how stupid drugs are.

I know for every artificial high you can get from dope, that theres a good handful of natural highs that come from life, Yeah theyre harder to come by, but thats what makes them special. If you buy these highs for whatever dollars,, and do it whenever you want, it just cheapens it and isnt special anymore at all. Not to mention the known and unknown side-effects.
