National Rainbow gathering
    #2897431 - 07/16/04 04:46 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I was just curious to see if any of the pubbers made it there. I couldn't make it myself :frown:, but heard that it was a great time(of course it was!) :sun:

Adom said there was a bad incident that happened...I didn't get all the details so don't wanna say anything more...but sounded fucked up if it was true...

Well...don't quote me on this...but I'm pretty sure he said someone had got stabbed...which is pretty fuckin' unbelievable...so maybe I misunderstood him and he was talkin' about something else...

maybe someone has a bit more insite on this that actually went or knew of people who went...

one of our friends just got back today from it...was MIA for about a week or so...supposedly was supposed to go to work on Monday and his mom was supposed to go to a concert on Wed. but they never showed so I'm excited to talk to him to see how it was...

yea, someone got killed or hurt really bad.... here's the story warrior told me

harry hugs was in the parking lot, had a shovel, and told this car to slow down, they didnt, so he hit the car with the shovel he had, broke the winshiled, or some other window, not sure, then they stooped, then the 2 guys jumped out with knifes, and as they came closer, he hit both them with the shovel.

i dont know how accurate that is, the story on the internet is simmilar, but not as many details... so its hard to know.... that happened mid june 20's... or so

I just read in Hipforums that somone was beaten nearly to death in a camp there. That's some screwed up news. It's a shame to hear of such a thing happening in such a beautiful scene. :frown:

It's true, my friend was there and it was the A camper drunken morons who did it from what I've heard. Phychotrons story sounds about the same as the one I heard. I guess he ended up in the hospitol in a coma and later died, dude with the shovel is now facing manslaughter at the very least. The worst part is he was speading throuh A camp because some had been bitten by a poisinous snake and they were trying to get their friend to the hospitol. Very stupid drama turned into something deadly, fueled by everyones friend alcohol....

Other than that it was mostly great, I guess there was doses floating around, he took a couple he said were great.

I guess this is why alchohol is discouraged at gatherings. At least they gotta keep it in a camp, but the vibes still spread.

What's up, Adom? You catch all them catfish for kc's gathering yet?

Quote:

Put too many anarchists in one place, regardless of their goal to pray for world peace, and there's bound to be trouble.

Spokesmen for the Modoc County Sheriff's Office said Harry "Hugs" O'Neill, 47, of Whitehorn, Calif., was arrested Sunday after shattering a pickup truck's windshield with a shovel, then using the shovel to repeatedly strike the vehicle's two occupants.

O'Neill remained incarcerated today at the Modoc County Jail on two charges each of felony assault, felony battery with serious bodily injury, and personal infliction of serious bodily injury.

One victim, Christopher Witcher, 47, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., was flown from the camp to the Mercy Medical Center in Redding, Calif., where police said he was listed in critical condition with a punctured lung, ruptured spleen and head injuries.

Kelly Cook, 44, of Brosnan, Texas, was knocked unconscious but declined medical treatment.

...

One witness said Cook was driving his vehicle through the camp, located at Bearcamp Flat on the Modoc National Forest between Likely and Eagleville, at an unsafe speed.

Police said O'Neill flagged the vehicle to a stop, then struck and shattered the windshield with his shovel. When Witcher exited the vehicle, O'Neill struck him five to 10 times. When Cook tried to assist Witcher, police said he was struck at least three times before passing out.

Using violence to establish order in a collection of anarchists...isn't that part of the reason man developed government?

The assault was one of several incidents at the camp. The incident management team assisting Modoc National Forest officials with managing the event said an arrest was made Saturday for interfering with an officer. In addition, officers recovered a stolen vehicle and apprehended the two people. For safety reason, some vehicles that were blocking Forest Service roads had to be towed. Officers are also making frequent contacts on minor violations.

The law enforcement is being done even as Modoc officials continue efforts to have Rainbow representatives sign a noncommercial special use permit.

One person attending the gathering said Monday he has obtained de facto authorization from the Forest Service. Barry Adams said he and others notified Forest Service officials of the location for this year's assembly site June 10, then met with Modoc officials the following day to discuss resource concerns, at which time oral application for special use was made by Adams.

Adams claims that by law the Forest Service must process all such applications within 48 hours. Unless a written denial is issued within 48 hours, he said proposed events are considered "approved." No denial was issued by June 14, "indicating that the gathering site is approved," Adams said.

Anarchists tend to reject government bureaucracy, though some will accept government benefits like welfare. No question legally that a verbal request is insufficient. The forest service has to gather enough information on such a large event that it can do a limited environmental assessment. Do you suppose a gathering of 20,000 with, for instance, no public latrines will produce a FONSI (finding of no significant impact)? How about fire prevention in a dry forest?

One might think that environmental activists would decry such devastation of a natural area...if one were naive. Too many activists are using environmental issues to push other agendas that involve opposing the government, industry, etc. They're not going to waste their energy fighting a group of anarchists that lacks political power and produces a percentage of their activist base.

Green is too often a banner of convenience, and ideal to project upon others and to selectively ignore as one pleases.

per the mention of latrines:
yeah, that is one problem i have heard about from rainbow attendees (sometimes the rainbow folks come to starwood with family pics slide shows)... sanitation...
gotta practice decent field hygene... at least slit trench latrines, some lime, and hand-washing facilities of some sort... with some folks shittin in the woods (like bears?) & some folks drinking contaminated surface water, there is often a lot ummmmmm "gastrointestinal upset" going around...

so:
crap in a well-dug hole, downstream (or downhill, or generally just away from potential drinking water)...
wash hand with soap & water (7 that hand-sterilizer stuff i suppose)...
& boil (or sterilize with iodine or chlorine) all drinking water...

"anarchists" - well, whatever, heh...

yea, the shitters were a problem this year, the natives didnt want any holes dug at all, anchient indian burrial ground and all, so shitters couldnt be deeper than 3 feet. Also, when i was digging 2 shitters, i went by main supply and asked if they had any lime, they were like "nope"... main supply was wierd this year...
