House Votes to Block Aid for Saudi Arabia Email this story
Jul 15, 11:40 PM (ET)
By Anna Willard
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Lawmakers cheered as the House of Representatives voted on Thursday to strip financial assistance for Saudi Arabia from a foreign aid bill because of criticism that the country has not been sufficiently cooperative in the U.S. war on terror.
The vote was a stinging defeat for the Bush Administration which had strongly opposed the measure saying it would "severely undermine" counterterrorism cooperation with Saudi Arabia and U.S. efforts for peace in the Middle East.
The House voted 217-191 to remove $25,000 in the $19.4 billion 2005 foreign aid bill earmarked for Saudi Arabia.
The funds were designated for military training but approval would have triggered millions of dollars in discounts on hardware and other military training, lawmakers said.
"I don't want my taxpayer dollars going to the Saudis and I don't want anyone else's to," said Nevada Democratic Rep. Shelley Berkley.
Supporters of the measure also argued that with Saudi Arabia's massive wealth from ownership of one-fourth of the world's proven oil reserves, the kingdom should not need financial aid from the United States.
The Senate would also have to strip the Saudi aid from its version of the foreign assistance bill before it stands a chance of being enacted.
U.S.- Saudi ties were shaken by the fact that 15 of the 19 hijackers in the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001 were Saudi nationals and revelations that individual Saudis had financed al Qaeda, whose leader, Osama bin Laden, was born in the kingdom.
A study by the Council on Foreign Relations found recently that Saudi Arabia has stepped up its efforts to halt the flow of funds to militant groups, but said more needed to be done.
Arizona Republican Rep. Jim Kolbe, said the timing of the House measure "could not be worse." He acknowledged Saudi Arabia had not always been a model partner in the war on terror but said "we need all the friends and allies we can get."

19.4 billion is the TOTAL foreign aid.
they stripped out the 25k that was intended to go to SA.
at least that's how I read it.
but I can see the ambiguity in the phrasing.

I really wish America was more Isolationist, like a safe-haven for the rest of the world's people rather than a country that goes out and tries to make the rest of the world safe.

We were isolationist prior to WW2 when technology made it dangerous to have your back turned. Active involvement became a necessity

I think active involvement in the rest of the worlds affairs is dangerous to America's health, I really do. We've really got to stop being so Hienous by not going to war. If all the action we've made is good and progress, tell me why is there a terrorist threat? And didn't all this "Holy Land" involvement (which most of our conflicts with the arabs stem from) start after World War II? Shit, I can't wait to leave!

Should have happened sooner.
I can never seem to understand why, a country that talks so much about democracy, and human rights , would be so conterproductive to those values. I mean why not stop helping the leader of uzbekistan(spelling???) here is a guy that literally boils his opponents alive.
Brtian just recalled their ambassador for telling the truth and saying he is a murdurous tyrant.
Countrys like China, Suadia Arabia, should be treated like the governments they are..... dictatorships
Any REAL democracy would put real pressure on these countrys to change or lose out.
And not selling the world largest ammount of TORTURE WEAPONS to these governments might help americas reputation around the world.
Russia, and Italy, the former is not only cruching disent , but they are conducting terror, and Italy, well if you havent heard ITALY IS FASCIST AGAIN! (see for yourself, do a search if I am wrong .....done looking.....scary I know)
Turkey, here is another horrible dictatorship, and every time they step on people a little more....they are praised by america as a democracy.
If America took a hard line against ALL the worlds worst governments, intead of supporting their (economic) "friends".
I would(happiy) be the first canadian on my block to shout "I LOVE AMERICA!!!!!!" !!!!!!!!!!!!
"What the hell are we giving money to the saudis for? They are rich rich rich off gouging everyone on oil."
Because , people in your country are getting RICH off the saudis

There are many ways to be activly involved. I don't think we go about it right most of the time but involved some how we must be IMHO.
