How long do spores last?
    #2896675 - 07/16/04 01:05 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I have about four spore syringes that have been stored inside a fridge for about a year and a half - almost two years. Should I bother trying to work with them or should I order more?

Also, what sized pressure cooker will I need for about 5-6 pint sized jars?

I've heard of people using decade old syringes with pretty good results. Just do a PF jar and print whatever comes out and use those to do a real project.

Dude, just throw those ones away. They usually last up to around a year. For the size of the pressure cooker, it doesnt matter, just what ever size you need to fit all of your jars.

Even a 10 quart All-American canner (910) will hold up to seven pint jars, however it's quart jar capacity is only four. If you step up to something in the 15 quart range, like the 915, then you'll be able to get 10 pints or seven quart jars respectively. You might not be thinking about using quarts right now, but no reason to restrict your possibilities for the future as your myco skills improve.

Here is a good size chart breakdown that shows what the All-American line is designed to fit. Internal volume of these is similar to that of cheaper cookers so you can probably use it as a good way to estimate other manufactures capacity for same quart volume cookers:

Spores in suspension that old are probably no longer stable, we recommend to our customers that they attempt microscopy no later than 3-5 months of receiving their spores (and only if for this time the spores have been properly stored in a fridge).

To tell you a lil story about life of syringes. I had a PF Strain syringe for around 1 year and a few months, finally injected em, didn't do anything but contam into pink. There probably no good man. I would order fresh ones just to be sure. PLUS, support the sponsors!

I think Ill try one and order a few new ones. By the time the new ones arrive Ill know whether to throw the rest away.

Use them!! I just finished fruiting two syringes that I got from Hawks Eye that were 4 years old! And they were just in the closet. Spores can last a looooonnnnngggg time as long as they are not exposed to heat.

Is it better to store them in the fridge? I just keep mine in a drawer at room temperature.
