At last, Stropharia comes home. [cultures available]

At long last, the Stropharia rugoso-annulata I collected, cultured, and shared with many, here and elsewhere, has finally come home. After two years of keeping cultures and hearing of their exploits around the world, I have finally built and fruited a bed of my own. Commonly known as the 'Wine-Cap' or 'Garden Giant' mushroom, it is a delicious edible. I collected this strain myself two years ago on Cape Cod. I found a single specimen growing on wood chips on a pathway at the Mass Audubon Society Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, brought it home, and cloned it to agar. I traded my culture of it with an online acquaintance in Austria, who traded it with someone in Oregon, who sent me a photo of it proliferating in his garden. I since shared it with many others. I love how it has traveled the world; apparently spores are not the only means that fungi use to get around. My bed is 80# of alder chips covered with a casing of coco coir. It grew out last summer and fall, but did not fruit until now. The bed was covered with black weed mat until two weeks ago, when I replaced it with a nylon mesh supported with metal rods (squirrel guard.) Something you cannot see in these pictures is that my local slug population has tasted these tasty morsels before I have. I have put down "sluggo" bait & diatomaceous earth, all to no avail. Even the beer I put out in a dish was less appealing than my mushrooms. I have some copper tape on order, hopefully that will help. In the meantime I am hand wrangling them night after night. I'll post more images as they (the mushrooms, not the slugs) develop. - Armedia

Just a few more pics since the last post. Been too busy harvesting and eating to post before now.
As with other species, once these guys reach a certain size, they nearly double in size each day. There isn't much difference in flavor between small and big ones, but smaller ones tend to be firmer. I have found that letting larger ones dry out a bit in the open air helps to minimize moisture in cooking.
There were so many we had to call in a trucking service to haul them away. I figure that we harvested between 5-10 # for the first flush, over 3 days.
Anyone looking for a print, pm me with an address, and I send it out ASAP.

Thanks to everyone for the kudos.
If any of you requested a print, as long as you have given me your address, I will be sending them out ASAP (consider this my reply.)
If you want to make offers of trades, please do. I'm only interested in legal (USA) interesting things. I have cultures of most of the commonly cultivated species. I'm looking for Pleurotus cystidosus, A. brasiliensis, subrufescens, and luminescent cultures of any kind.

Fairly wide. These are on alder, but it will grow on straw, other hardwoods, even rich garden soil & composts. As for softwoods, the jury is still out.

Actually, indoors, while not impossible, is not so simple for this species. It requires a bacterially enriched casing soil to fruit, and can easily contaminate before fruiting.
If you start an outdoor bed this year, even later in the summer, it will likely fruit next spring.

It is frost tolerant. With the cold winters we have round here, I always cover my beds with a layer of straw and black cloth as insulation.

To those who requested prints from this bed, and did not get any, I'm sorry, but the beds did not fruit again this season.
I did however pull out the culture from storage, and have plates now.
If anyone is interested in a culture, PM me, and I'll mail out a few wedges.
- armedia
Ps. Feel free to offer anything interesting for potential trades.
