seattle pan subbs?
    #2894405 - 07/15/04 06:15 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Went on a walk the other day after the rains, and found these little guys baking in the sun. They looked more like subs yesterday but of course I didn't have my camera on me. They were found in a couple of new lawns, which isn't too common I guess, but I'm pretty confident:

I'm taking prints of these particular mushrooms right now, but the prints I took from picking the other day are all jet black.

I'm pretty sure they're Pan Subbs... any experts care to verify?

Peace - @cro

They look a LOT like subs to me.

What are these strange marks?

I saw something similar around in a few lawns a while back too, never picked any for spore prints or pics but I don't think they're pan subbs, I could be wrong though. the ones I saw had the zonate caps just like subbs when they were fresh and were definitely not pan foens, I looked at them for a while and dismissed them for some reason or another, but it'll be interesting to see what those more familiar with Panaeolus around here say...

Take a look at PNW Panaeolus Key, I'm thinking what I had was P. acuminatus or castaneifolius.

It's possible I have a mixed collection also. I picked from three different spots, two of which I believed to be subs, the third's caps were campanulate, I believed to have been large Foens and picked them for comparison in spore deposits. All three turned out black. The top two picks are from the area I believed at first were Foens. I'll try and get picks today of the other two patches.

Peace - @cro

that middle pic really looks like a sub, but it is hard to tell when they are dry. I was hoping to get some stuntzii after that last rain fall we had but came out empty handed...

I don't know @cro...
I see definate characteristics
of pan subbs...
The gills are on color brownish gray mottled blackening with age., spacing is a little wide but I've seen them spaced out like that.
The stipe is similar, IE: color, whitish hairs, fibrilous, twisted in age..

The cap throws me off..
It seems a little too striate and almost toothed
as it is with..other species of panaeolus.

I can't say with any certainty what species of panaeolus they are....

Nice pictures...

Nofindum....
