Yamaha has developed an absolutely amazing piece of "singing" software for music production called Vocaloid. I have not played with it only listened to the demos. Apparently you type in notes and words and some inflections and the program will sing in the style of a modeled artist. I believe they have three females modelled so far.

Currently it is easy to tell the real from the artificial, but I would guess in another two generations (maybe less than 10 years), it may be impossible for all but the best-trained ears.

I would use this as a backing track although it could be used for leads.

Runs about $450. No link - do a search.

The proof is in the pudding.

i'm currently working on a design to use a 'speakjet' chip for music.
of course, it will never sound human, but should be excellent for chants and psycho-babble

i previously experimented with an older chip - spo-256
that had no pitch control nor intonation, so sounds pure robot. hopefully the speakjet will be a lot better.

also have a design for the 'chatterbox'. little handheld device, with 2 joysticks and 6 touchplates. it was designed to help handicapped kids communicate or at least make human voice sounds. haven't made it yet.
