what do you guys think about this story?
i especially like the part where Dymally, who had scheduled a protest over the issue, remarked "To err is human; to forgive is divine."

Everybody makes mistakes and most of us say something stupid from time to time... if this was a once in a blue moon type of goof, then I see no harm... if this is a pattern of behavior, then he needs to find a new job.

I don't know, that seems like totally bizarre behavior. I will easily go my entire adult life without saying such an insulting thing to a child. How can that be a mistake? The link doesn't seem to work but I read the story a couple days ago. After he said that the little girl protested that, "No, it means Egyptian goddess" and he reponds with something sarcastic like "...Hey...that's nifty".
Maybe he's a Christian fundamentalist and is offended by the reference to an Egyptian god?

I think he has some kind of psychological disorder... it said in that article that he has a history of out of place and somewhat offensive comments at random.

you saw that old white fat dude talking as if he really knows a lot.
"But the issue has persisted. In an editorial Thursday, The Sacramento Bee said California "shouldn't have an education secretary who makes offensive, damaging remarks to young children for no apparent reason."
"He's the governor's top person on education, which means we would expect him to have some love and respect for children," Huffman said. "I think he is the wrong man for the job. There is no way for him to explain this away."
haha so any person then who makes a snide remarks towards a child automatically doesn't love children?
this is a dumb article. the sacramento Bee is a shitty paper for even thinking about this. people get offended way too easily.
-------------------- Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

the beef that I had with the story isn't even about his remarks. personally, i think he was just teasing the girl....no harm done, really. just fun. (i seriously doubt that he said it with the intention of scarring the girl for life)
rather, i thought it odd how Dymally had scheduled a public protest to force the dude's resignation based solely on the information that the girl was black. when he found out that the girl was white he withdrew the protest. he totally 100% assumed that the remark was because of a racist disposition. either that or he believes that young black children are more sensitive or more deserving of justice than others.
why couldn't he have forgiven the man before he knew what race the girl was? after all, "To err is human; to forgive is divine" or so he says (at least when it's his head on the chopping block).

Riordan should be finished in his public capacity many are qualified. many of those know how to use language constructively. there are no excuses and no need to hold onto the position.

"As mayor, he once greeted hunger strikers outside his office eating a hamburger."
Personally, that gets 4 thumbs up.
And they mention that like it's a negative. christ. sure, it's a smart-assed thing to do, but hey! What better way to say "You know, I really think what you people are doing is really stupid"?
I don't agree with his comment to the girl, but honestly we have no idea what the context was. They may have been sitting around and joking. She may have made a joke about his name.
of course, Dymally should be smacked in the face for being an idiot. SO obviously just trying to beat up the wardrums and garner support from the black community to fuel a reelection. So obviously. Oops the girl's white, let's get outta here folks.
wtf?
slimeball.
much slimier than making fun of the girl's name in the first place... to make an issue out of it only because you think she's black, and drop it immediately when you find out she's white. Because banging the sabers about a young white girl wouldn't get him the votes of his black constitutents. Fucking jackass. Things would be much better if he, and people like him, all just toppled over and stopped moving.

I wouldn't assume the little girl was black because she was named Isis. Now if her name was Isishamika it's a different story..

I agree with Mushmonkey about his comment that they may have been joking around before the comment was made. It seems quite odd that he would say that out of nowhere and it never mentions how her name was brought up in the first place. I just dont think the whole story is in the article, thats all.

Quote:
The conversation, videotaped by KEYT-TV, took place July 1. The girl, 6-year-old Isis D'Luciano, asked Riordan if he knew her name meant "Egyptian goddess."
Riordan replied, "It means stupid dirty girl."
After nervous laughter in the room, the girl again told Riordan the meaning of her name.
The little girl's probably a little brat. Her mom probably doesn't know how to teach her any discipline, like most parents these days. The guy only made the remark AFTER the little girl was bragging that her name meant Egyptian goddess. Hopefully his remark will help to make Isis grow up to be even a fraction of a tenth of one percent less of a bitch. Just look at the picture of the girl and her mom at the top of the article. Them's some bitches with issues.
