Re: How to start a revolution. [Re: Twirling]
    #2968667 - 08/05/04 03:36 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

Thanks for your suggestions Twirling, keep 'em coming.  Your ideas gave me new inspiration and direction. Here's some thoughts... lots of words but I'm basically saying, "Right on!"

-Introduction to psilocybin chemically, and some cultural history & uses

Yes, this information is pretty easy to find... at other websites. It should be featured at The Shroomery as well. I agree this is an important part of the Tripper's FAQ. Perhaps the first thing people should read after the introduction. People have tripped for thousands of years, but they have a pretty recent modern history.

-Seeing the world in a new light/preparing to let go of old vantage points (for new trippers who haven't experienced loss of boundaries/identity)

Yes... a trip is what you make of it... just like the world. Any preconceived notions of what tripping or hallucinations will be, can negatively influence or hinder your trip.

Best to prepare people for the unexpected. Leary's The Psychedelic Experience does a very good job of explaining the difficulties of preconceived notions and newbie trippers IMO.

-Meditation techniques with explanation. Try to convey that these are just techniques to help the body & mind do some amazing things. In other words, take the mystical out to allow the reader to experience the mystical feelings themselves. Again, to not alienate more scientifically grounded individuals (maybe include research about meditation and how it effects the mind).

Again, yes. Meditation is a great way to learn to trip in a positive manor.

Simply put, meditation is a tool to help reduce thinking and find a neutral emotional perspective. In the tripping world, thinking can be a bad thing. The less you think the more profound and positive your trip will be.

Meditation keeps you focused on something so you don't have think about much else. Focus on your breath... meditation. Focus on the sounds around you... meditation.

-Tripping toys
Nature, nature, music... what else?

-Trip music suggestions, but keep recommendations categorized for what emotion it can bring out, so that a person doesn?t get freaked out by Tool, but be able to appreciate it when they?re ready.

I agree music would be fun to focus on but the topic of music is subjective. As for what emotion certain music brings out, that can be very different for different people. I think it is better to focus on the tone of the music rather than the emotions it can evoke. Tool has a dark tone but it can be very rewarding.

-How to take action in your sober life. Using what you've learned of yourself to help change yourself or the world around you. This could do more with psychological issues people may have so that the lessons learned stick. It could also contain some ideas of positive things people could do to help each other.

YES!!! Wonderful idea. Being a tripper does not mean you trip every day. In fact for most trippers, the more you trip, the less you need to trip. Tripping philosophy works very well in sober life... as you learn how the world works, you begin to be able to work with the world once again.

-Just some ideas, if you'd like I'd love to write more, especially about psychology and music. Perhaps it would also be wise to have a goal in mind, IE do we want to gear it towards the common man (like I mentioned in this list) or are we looking for the Terrence McKenna style - all out spiritual exploration, or perhaps both, reserved in the beginning, and more experienced towards the end (which is the way I think it should go)?

Yes, please feel free to write more. You could get started on music straight away... I imagine the psychological aspects of this project should be more carefully considered, structured and researched before we proceed.

I can certainly help you with the music stuff(I listen to lots of music too...), either in this thread or in pm.

As for having a goal in mind, this is what I consider the goal: Write and/or compile links to give Shroomerites easy access to answers to their Frequently asked tripping questions. This way, newbie trippers can be pointed to the FAQ like newbie cultivators are. This will give Shroomerite trippers more of a voice in the community than they've had in recent months.

Let's take a look at how this FAQ should work.

First, each topic should answer a QUESTION. It is the FAQ.

For example, one subject EllemyshShade mentioned... Come up anxiety... needs to be titled in the form of a question... like: What is come up anxiety, and what can be done to stop or avoid it? I would love a description of the anxiety, ways to reduce or avoid it and pertinent links about come up anxiety... especially if any info was gleaned from these links while researching the answer to the question. Shroomery forum or archive links are best because I would love the Shroomery's take on the issue to answer the questions... whenever possible. I mean, please feel free to link to outside sites (Like Erowid), but Shroomery links should be featured first and foremost... especially when they hit the nail on the head. Don't forget to search The Shroomery archives. Linking to the appropriate chapter in The Psychedelic Experience would be great as well... so people can cross reference The Shroomery's words with Leary's and Erowid's.

I would also, like to keep this FAQ as mushroom specific as possible. This is The Shroomery's Tripper's FAQ.

This is not yet a scientific study of tripping, rather it is a look into the modern communal experience of tripping... eventually, this FAQ could be used to look very seriously at the Science of tripping.

Science is a big part of tripping and it will not be ignored, but we should take great care to make sure people know when they are reading about the THEORY of tripping rather than the SCIENCE of tripping. I think this FAQ could do the community a great service. Even if it just serves to show people where the SCIENCE ends and the THEORY begins. Only once the line between science, theory and mushrooms is clearly drawn, will we be able to really work on making the theory fact.

Please, everybody... keep the suggestions ideas and contributions coming.

~EDIT... BOY I read the first draft of this post and it was very hard to read... lots of changes... too many to mention. I pity the people who read through the first version.

Okay, I've spent most of the morning working on the anxiety document and it's taking a little bit longer then I thought.  In fact, it might be too long...I might not have it done by this weekend due to prior engagements today and tomorrow, but I am putting time into it.  I like your idea Cervantes of putting it in the name of a question, describing the anxieties, etc.

I am very excited about this entire concept of a psychedelic revolution.  Slowly but surely, I think progress is being made.

As for the FAQ questions, quite a comprehensive list! Could #48 be covered under #2?

The only difference between the two questions is a big one. One is a general dosage question, the other is a noobie dosage question. Other than that, they are pretty much the same. I'll rephrase them into one question.

Good to know you're working on the anxiety essay.

Take your time. Please feel free to pm me when you're done, or you can post it in this thread for public review.

I'm thinking this FAQ will move along at one or two questions a day... until all the questions are answered.

Then the FAQ will be reviewed and updated before it is finally submitted to the big guys.

I do want to get a bunch of atricles written by Shroomerite's. Have them discuss their personal experiences with psychadellics. Imagine essays by Ythan, Anno, Mj, Chinacat, Workman and countless others... about tripping... what they've learned, books they've read, theories they have... favorite ways to trip... it could be very interesting and enlightening.

I have a fair bit of experience with very high dose mushroom trips. If I trip I like to take 10grams or more. I will try to covey some of the trips i've had into words. The biggests things to remember for me are to never worry and go with it

Without a doubt, there should be a "to read" list.

Terence McKenna, Timothy Leary, Aldous Huxley should be at the top.

I'm kind of surprised that no one has mentioned Robert Anton Wilson, yet.  Yes, he talks very little about tripping, but he is one of the foremost thinkers on the planet and his books, Quantum Psychology and Prometheus Rising have had a profound influence in my life and a lot his ideas come to a deeper understanding while I'm tripping.  Just a suggestion, include RAW when you mention the other authors.

I think it would be a good idea to take McKenna's harder ideas and to translate them "down" so its easier to understand.  I know that while I understand much of McKenna's thoughts, talking about them to other people, getting their takes on them, has made him even more enjoyable to read and to learn from.  After reading and listening to this man for so long, I have come to the conclusion that he was on to something real and its our jobs to take the torch and run with it.

Having a permanent running discussion thread about these authors might be another idea.  It would be overwhelming at first, but if a person takes it slowly, the amount of knowledge that the person would gain, would be definitely worth it.

A list of definite albums to trip to is a great idea.  An art section would be good as well, Dali and Alex Grey are my favorite to look at while tripping.

The term "getting fucked up" should be abolished, its disrespectful to the mushroom as well as the people who are tripping for spiritual  or other "respectful" reasons.

Just some thoughts.

McKennaDMT

P.S. I may be a new poster from the date I registered but I've been coming here for a while and have been reading for a long time on these subjects as well as subjects related.  I've been waiting for a thread like this and think it's a great idea.

I think that one very important question's been missed:

Why trip?

Mushrooms ARE SO FUCKING underrated...

They truly are the greatest "drug" you can take, IMO.

The two trips I exp. were like nothing Ive ever witnessed before, not only was it fucking unbelievably fun and awesome, but like many others say, it makes you realize shit and think in a completely different mindset, its like you have enhanced your brain to the point where everything becomes clear and your understand everything so well...

So, the question is, why isnt everyone eating them? Why doesnt everyone know the power of the mushroom? I just dont understand it..

Everyone I know is so afraid to try it, though they arent dangerous like other drugs such as cocaine, ecstacy, etc. Why are they so afraid? Its a hell of a lot MORE FUN, CHEAPER, AND LASTS LONGER than any drug I know of, besides maybe acid. (which I have never experienced, but plan on trying it in the near future)

Leary said... well not Leary.... maybe.... Terrance McKenna quotes Leary as saying (Although McKenna admitted Leary never remembered saying it).

"Psychadellics cause mass hysteria... in people who never try them."

It might sound bad, but I hate the term drug when applied to certain substances.  Mushrooms, marijuana, yage, are not drugs.  When someone says drugs I immediately think of heroin or cocaine or 'tussin.  I'm not sure if that's a good mindset to have or not, but I just don't think plants, in their unadulterated form are drugs.

"So, the question is, why isnt everyone eating them? Why doesnt everyone know the power of the mushroom? I just dont understand it.."

Again, I know this may sound elitist, but I'm not sure everyone should know about the power of the mushroom.  I know some people who are so "brainwashed" by religion that they will not do many things just because they don't think God will approve or they'll go to hell.  For me, that boggles my mind to know end and always has.  These same people who eat vegetables won't eat another one that has "magical" properties.  My main thinking is that they are scared of life and religion is a security blanket that they can hide behind when the going gets rough.

One of my cousins is so devoutly a christian that she has tried to save my soul countless times by sending me cards in the mail reminding me to think of jesus at all times and that he is the light that I need to focus on and all that crap.  The same cousin, for some odd reason, whenever we get together for family get togethers is always hanging around me asking me about my entheogenic (that's what I refer to them as) experiences, especially the bad trips.  I've only had one true bad one and she constantly brings it up, saying that I visited hell, god, was showing me what will happen if I continue down this lifepath.  Its the scariest thing, seeing her speak, it truely is.

What is a psychedelic experience?

I?ve always equated it to a waking dream state. In the same way that you have good dreams and nightmares, you can have positive trips and bad trips. A hallucinogen allows you to stimulate the imagination, and open up the part of your mind that usually only comes to life while you sleep.

During a trip, the things you experience can be as real to you as any experience you?ve had outside of a psychedelic state. This can allow one to explore experiences that you could otherwise never have, or never survive. Alone, this makes any psychedelic a powerful teaching tool.

Another aspect that makes psychedelics wonderful teaching tools, they allow for the deconstruction of the human mind. By merging the conscious and unconscious minds, one can see the inner workings of their own psyche. You can face, and conquer your greatest fears, and see where they stem from. The feeling of triumph obtained when overcoming such fears is not an illusion, and will remain with you as any other experience would.

So what is a psychedelic experience? It is a tool, a powerful teaching tool that when used properly can aid in the expansion of your personal human experience.
--------------------

Well, thats my controbution. Take it or leave it, thats what I've come to discover.

This is my first post here but I'm lurking for a long time.

Very nice initiative, I can see how this can become a very valuable tool. One question I would like to comment on:

15. I had a bad trip. What went wrong?

In my mind bad trip is a very broad subject. A bad trip might be someone having a good trip and suddenly being confronted with people or situations that are hard to deal with while tripping. For example, someone's parent coming back early from a vacation, some hazard happening or whathever. Basically influences outside the control of the tripper that turn a nice experience into a nightmare. These types of bad trip are generally hard to deal with but info could be given on how to avoid them.

Something else that falls into the category bad trip would be personal stuff emerging from someones uncounsciousness that the tripper did not expect. These kind of experiences have the potency of becoming major life changing experiences when they are dealt with correctly. Pushing away memories like this and not wanting to deal with them, will easily turn a trip into a nightmare. These memories can be personal fears, unhappiness with someones past and lots more. The shamanic death/rebirth struggle is maybe one of the best and most powerful examples.

O well, if I don't make sense at all, just remember I'm newbie here

A suggestion, if I may:
As much info regarding how the alkaloids interact with your body and lethal dosage info (ha) should be as near the top of said FAQ as possible without losing the general flow of the document.
In my experience, most people shy away from psychedelics (especially shrooms) due to lack of knowledge on the subject and urban legends.  i.e. 'if you trip more than seven times you are legally insane' or 'mushrooms make your brain bleed which is why you see trails' and even 'all mushrooms contain deadly poison in different quantities'.  I think if people knew more about how safe these can be (assuming you've done your reading  ), they'd be more open to experience them.
I think a good deal of myth-busting should be right up front so as to put the reader at ease a bit and maybe even spite the anti-shroom majority into reading further, or at least shut their collective mouths a bit.
I for one would certainly wouldn't want to try heroin if the OD info were right at the forefront of what I hear about it.  Hell, if there were an alcohol FAQ with OD info at the top I might never have started drinking.  But as for something almost completely safe....
[edit]
I really like what you've started here, Cervantes.  I'll help out in anyway I can.

Tripper's FAQ Under Construction [Re: nunciate]
    #3042134 - 08/23/04 11:43 PM (20 years, 25 days ago)

Please, Keep giving your input and suggestions. You make great points, the FAQ... when it is done, will certainly reflect your suggestions.

Thanks. I'm gonna' write a lot now, because I haven't updated this project in a while... and my ideas about this FAQ won't help much if I keep 'em to myself.

Now, what can you... or anybody else do to help Tripper's FAQ? Here's a couple things.

Keep posting in the FAQ threads.

Pick a question, research and answer it essay form. You can post your essay in this thread, or pm it to me, and I will use it in the FAQ... as long as it is consise, informative and honest.

Also, feel free to look for interesting, or informative links that pertain to certain questions. Look for links that would help answer, or provide a cool footnote to a subject. Post any links you think will help. Post any good Shroomery links you stumble over, but pay attention to other sites as well.

This goes for anyone who wishes to help we need essays, links and input in the FAQ threads that are posted post every few days.

I hope more of the old farts at this site start to contribute. Their opinions are valued highly. They have more experience in Mushrooms and the Online Mushroom Community than most people in the world.

I am compiling a word document with all the questions, links and essays, as they are collected. So far, I have not written any of the essays myself... yet... but I will... probably the shitty essays that nobody else wants to do.

So far, EllemyshShade has written a fabulous essay about anxiety, which I will post tonight. All other essays are available. Pick the ones you wish to write and submit them. There will be plenty of time to polish the essays, if needed, before the FAQ is compiled. Until then, I am going to focus on the FAQ question threads and do a lot of research. I don't want to write too much until I know more about the project's requirements. The FAQ is taking form... slowly but surely.

The Tripper's FAQ will be changed and updated as new information becomes available, or if people don't understand, or are mislead by what is said in the essays. People can keep adding their opinions and suggestions in the FAQ question threads... that are still being posted every few days.

At this point, anybody can and should pick the essays they are feel passionate about writing. Even if you are not a professional writer (I sure as hell am not).

At this point, it is important to simply have something... anything... with good, organized, easy to access, information. Once The FAQ is up, it will be refined until it kicks much ass.

Anyway, thanks nunciate for your suggestions and for keeping the discussion alive.

Please, everybody keep contributing.

Write whatever essays you can, and I'll post it and see what people think, or if you wish, I can offer my suggestions before showing it to the public.

Just post which question you wish to answer in this thread and it will be reserved for you. There is plenty of time to work on these essays so don't worry. They don't need to be long, they just need to answer the question.

Enough ranting for now.

Tripper's FAQ Under Construction [Re: Rose]
    #3042315 - 08/24/04 12:33 AM (20 years, 25 days ago)

The first post in this thread has been updated. Check it out. The FAQ is taking form. It still has a long way to go but it is taking shape. Thanks everybody for your help.

If you want to answer one of the questions, just post which one you wish to answer and start writing. PM me when you are done. I will either give you suggestions or post it in the forum and see if anybody thinks it is ready to post.

The more people who contribute, the more evident it should become to N00B trippers. People who trip have very similar experiences while tripping.

A good way to deal with anxiety during shroom trips is take a xanax. Its an antidepression pill that takes away all anxiety and stress to guarentee a good shroom trip. Also if you are on a bad trip try stress breathing. You take a long slow and deep breath in through your mouth and hold it for maybe 10 - 15 seconds, then exhale slowly through the nose. This reduces the ammount of oxygen that goes to the brain from huge amounts which promotes all the quick thinking (I.E. panicking) and gives you a slow steady pace.
Peace out guys

Anno started a Tripper's FAQ Wiki.
http://shroomery.org/wiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TrippersFAQ

WTF is a Wiki you ask?

http://shroomery.org/wiki/pmwiki.php/PmWiki/WikiWikiWeb
This link explains it very well.

It is a website that EVERYONE CAN EDIT AT ANY TIME!

This will make creating the FAQ much easier. Any page, any post, anything!

Any changes can be rolled back, so if someone posts something stupid, the post can be rolled back. I'll be keeping a close eye on things.

I have been using it all night. Took me about 60-90 minutes to learn the advanced techniques... AND I am a html newbie. I was editing in minutes. If you can edit a post, you can edit a Wiki page.

All you have to do is add text. Someone else will format it if you don't want to.

It is very easy to add information or post links, comments... brainstorms... whatever!

Remember how I've been saying YOU will make the Tripper's FAQ, well, you WILL! Now, you can!

Have fun, be creative, give good information. Anyone can edit anybody's work. Work on what you feel like. Work at your pace.

I will still post the discussion threads in this forum, because this FAQ belongs in Trip Tips.

Check it out!

See why this is so cool?
