Personally I doubt the "2012" theories that are flying around...I think humanity is in for some "big changes" over the next 20 years or so (isn't that obvious?) but I don't know that they will be sudden changes or that they will end as "good" changes...

Why would 2012 be the end...because of some bogus new age "prophecy". Mayan prophecies my ass.

IF it is the end then not a whole lot of what anyone has to say about it will matter then.

meh, I dunno, I'm just interested in anyone's opinion about whether or not there's anything to the 2012 theories and if so what form the change will take. I guess it's probably the topic I'm most interested in these days. It's sort of weird cause like I figure if it's correct then it's really significant and if it's not then that's significant too cause it means the struggle to not extinctify ourselves is going to be much more spread out and there could be who knows how many more generations coming along before the people start wising up and not wanting to drive luxury SUVs and whatnot. I'm inclined to think, like you, that it's going to be more spread out like 20 years but then again maybe these weather problems are getting exponentially worse or maybe Bush is going to 'win' again this fall or who knows.

My predictions for the next 20 years:

-World War 3
-end of oil as a major energy source (with a possible collapse of our oil-based economy and lifestyle)
-some climate changes that will be felt worldwide...I never used to think the "global warming" concept had much credit to it, but I'm starting to think otherwise

If anyone is actually willing to invest an amount of time in exploring McKenna's timewave theory and it's relationship with the I Ching, I'm fairly confident that if your own discoveries don't convince you then they will at least raise an eyebrow and humble the typical "my ass" remarks.

Now, I don't mean to say that there is some disaster ticking closer as the "end date" of 8:13am (EST) Dec 21, 2012 approaches. Not even McKenna suggested such a thing. McKenna suggested that, according to his extensive (and self-admitted unorthodox) research, there would be "something quite fantastic" which would culminate at that date and time. Notice that the word culminate was used, instead of "occur". An occurance is an isolatable event such as Hiroshima or the holocaust. In this context, culimnation refers to some sort of peak or crest, the height of a summit. What that might represent is completely unpredictable. Terence McKenna limited himself to vauge musings on the subject, and in general didn't like to talk about it. In his own words, "I am not an apocalypse theorist."

Nonetheless, when contemplating this question, our present state of affairs would naturally be taken into consideration. Unfortunately, our present state of affairs includes growing global tension, growing political tension in the world's nuclear powers, growing tension within the natural environment, and so on and so forth. The amount of tension in the world at present is very real and very detectable. One need not read the newspaper or watch CNN. One can simply feel it. So it makes sense, then, to extrapolate that such tension must have a breaking point, and will in the not-so-distant future be released in catestrophic ways. When tension is released, it is typically released all at once, abruptly, like the snap of a guitar string. Considering that chemical, biological and nuclear weapons are involved, wouldn't it make sense to suppose that such a release might resemble an apocalypse? Indeed, the degree of fire power available to our completely untrustworthy leaders is immense.

And so some have followed this line of logic and concluded that Dec 21, 2012 will be the date the guitar string of growing international tension finally snaps. After all, it would seem appropriately timed. Many of us cannot imagine the world proceeding the way it has been for yet another generation. Granted, this is a sentiment which has been tossed around for hundreds of years. But there is one trend that no one has noticed: the people among us who find the future incomprehensible are growing younger and younger. Children as young as 15 are speaking amongst themselves about "kids these days." Doesn't that seem a bit strange? A little bit noteworthy? How much turmoil and hard-hitting change can be tolerated before the whole big engine flies apart at the seams? It is a perfectly reasonable point of contemplation.

Breaking away from the whole 2012 thing now, I'd like to add that those of us who believe things will trudge along as normal for the next three centuries ought to look at things a second time and close their mouths before they embarass themselves. History has shown us twice before that when one nation attempts to pursuade, coerce, or dictate the policies of other nations, conflict on the global scale is the result. It is what started the first world war. It is what started the second world war. And it is what's happening right now, to increasing extremes. Even if there is not an outbreak of world war within our lifetime, the alarming potential of WWIII occurring within the next decade cannot and should not be ignored.

The WWIII scenario is a little difficult for me to swallow just cause of how much all these political factors and systems have been studied by this point. I could imagine the US involved in several Iraqs/Vietnams with multiple trickles of casualties but not another situation similar to the first or second world war.

The thing about children getting younger is a little unclear to me, could you elaborate on that one?

The issue with America in Iraq has to do with American presence in the Middle East. America's presence in Israel greatly disrupts the balance of powere in that region. The further east American control penetrates, the more threatened large nations such as Russia, China, and Japan will feel as the United States draws closer and closer to the resources upon which those nations are dependent. The consequences of American presence in Iraq -- and lets face it, there will American influence in Iraq for a very long time -- are much more far-reaching than most people first suspect.

It's typical for the older generations to find the younger ones bizarre and difficult to understand. Not so long ago, it would be seniors observing upcoming generations and finding bewilderment at their values. Then, it would be middle aged folks finding teen lifestyles bizarre. Now, teens are finding it difficult to understand those who are just a few years younger than they.

What I'm suggesting with this is that change itself has it's own acclivity, that among the things in this world subject to densification is also the rate of change itself. Culture has found itself embroiled in a kind of turbulence that has jumbled our generational values, making it difficult to maintain certain boundries, certain do's and don'ts. What's right and what's wrong are becoming increasingly subjective. It's of this that human beings are gradually becoming aware, and it's this which is behind a great amount of the world's ever-present instability. A paradigm shift is on the horizon.
