Most European countries have dark pasts when it comes to killing their own people, and that is why they aren't in our company. The most recent was Germany where they slaughtered people in the death camps. They don't want to think about their own dark pasts. They think that they are above us by rejecting the death penalty, but in reality they can't be trusted with it. The German death camps, the Spanish Inquizition, French persecution of the Jews, El Duche was a real pistol for the Italians. The Europeans love killing people and they love starting world wars, they are above nobody.
Just today I saw a report out of the UK. The protestants have a parade every year that celebrates the slaughtering of Catholics in the 1600's. If we had their history, I wouldn't want the death penalty either. I say we kill them too.
Maybe you should write a list of countries who have gone in for a campaign of slaughtering their own people.

Come on...every country has a history of slaughtering people. Are you really saying that no slaughtering has taken place in the States' (much shorter) history? If I wrote a list, it would be much easier to list the countries that haven't slaughtered their own people.
So, if all countries are equally sadistic, why is the US (almost) the only "free" country in that list. I mean, look at who is in there.
Iraq, Zimbabwe, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Iran...
kinda dodgy to be on the same list if you ask me.

The main problem I have with the death penalty is that innocent people can, and have been, killed.

I'm 100% in support of the death penalty, I just wish there were a little more suffering in the act.

So you are happy that innocent people can and have been executed by the government?
Nice.

I wish we had a voluntary death penalty. Send murderers to prison for life, but offer them a cyanide capsule at any time, so if they choose to take it, we don't have to keep spending money on them. This would be a lot cheaper than the death penalty as we currently have it.

Hehe, yeah, but I doubt many would take it.
But anyway, my original point is that the US is this list, surrounded by the dodgiest, most corrupt countries in the world. Wouldn't you want your country to get off that list?

What makes you say that? If I were locked away in a maximum security prison for the rest of my life, never to see the light of day again, that cyanide capsule would start to look pretty tempting to me.

No. I hope we never stop using the death penalty. I would like to see a requirement for DNA evidence though.

It's a bizarre statement, to be sure.

If you look at the rates of recidivism among ex-cons they are alarmingly high. They get out and continue to commit violent crimes. Compare that to the recidivist rates of those sentenced to the death penalty and you will find it to be an undeniable success.

euthanasia = yes death penalty = no Why don't I support death penalty? Because it is irreversible and permanent, but the judiciary sucks ass - it is not flawless and typically is narrow-minded, prefunctory, corrupted etc. etc. I'm proud that there is no death penalty in my country, though there are some assholes who make me wish there was... Made me want to reread Kafka's "The Trial"

usa does not only have death penalty they have something else too, a crime situatuin wich is unlike any other western countries. the gun attitute in america is unlike any other western country too. I understand very well that americans support death penatly, i would too with that kind of crime around me (perhaps).
Death penalty probably doesnt decrease crime, just like jail doesnt. but there arent so many alternatives that will work over the night.

well, americans like their guns unlike any other places i have been , the right to have a gun you take for so granted is not a right in all other countries. i dont know anybody that owns a gun other than hunting rifle. so america is diffrent there. i was chocked when i saw you could go into a bank in that moore movie, open an account and get to choose a gun. and people talked about it like it was the most normal thing in the world, that is exactly the attitude i am talking about here in norway, not even police walk around with guns. result of that combined with low jailtimes (max for anything is 21years, serve 2/3 no matter what ) is one of thereasons why there is around 100 murders only per year here i think. edit; bleh spellings.
