print on foil or paper?
    #2889732 - 07/14/04 03:03 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

foil seems like it is easier to sterilize and manipulate (easier to speed fold) but when scraping the print on foil for syring making purposes, won't the foil rip or tear? what do you all prefer for printing on?

Foil is better IMO.

It is easy to sterilize.
Spores are easily scraped away.
Doesnt get soaked with moisture during printing like paper.

If you use a good heavy duty foil you wont have any problems with it ripping when you scrape. It really only takes a light scraping motion with your syringe needle or scalpel to break off plenty for whatever you need.

Wax paper is great... easy like foil... just whipe with alcohol. Thick... and see through. Great for trades.

In order of preferance:

Glass
Foil
Plastic
Paper

Foil works great, don't buy the cheap stuff. Get the heavy duty foil and you can scrape spores from it fine. I have never once had a problem, except with prints sent to me taken on the weak stuff. Glass and plastic are also great, except I do not like the effects of static electricity holding the spores to the plastic. It is harder to get them to scrape off and fall into your syringe making dish. Paper I hate the most. Paper is porus and will trap spores, especially light prints. I have several that were traded to me like this, there is no scraping the spores off... If you make dark prints, any one will work. But light prints are the ones I have run into the most problems with, and in this case, foil has performed the best for me...

ATWAR, what sort of paper are you using? Ive used sturdy index cards before to take prints from wild mushrooms and couldnt really complain. Foil is still almost certainly better tho..

foil is a pain in the ass to work with, especially thin foil... i prefer the old index card folded in half methods...

some friends of mine here have recently discovered photo laminating sheets, they come in sizes from business card to full letter size sheet...

the sheets are two part, clear plastic, they will get you a sterile print, but they don't store well... the print falls off the plastic after a few weeks...

I like the paper ones because they store well, and they're easy to package and handle neatly.
