Actually when coming out of the jar, it's gonna be put in a regtangular plastic disposal container, with a 50/50+ casing layer!!
So it's from the jar into the container, no more substrate is added!!

sorry i was posting that other pic. when you posted that.
i still don't think it will matter.
some people say to break them up a bit anyway.
i personally think that if they're in chunks it will just grow through the casing layer in several places instead of just one if it were a whole cake.
i still think that if they're treated gently it will colonise the casing layer quicker than if it were rough-handled.
but apperently commercial growers actually press the bulk mycelium drown hydraulically before casing.

So this removal from jar should also be done in a sterile way?
Wearing examination gloves rubbed in with 80% alcohol?
Nice picture by the way, I now see it works when you have chunks, thanks pal!!

I also have seen post where people say they crumble it all. Does the colonised rye need to be taken out sterile??????

when you say 'sterile' i don't think it means surgery type sterile.
you just need to be clean, wear gloves if you want to although if you washed your hands and were generally clean yourself i think this should be o.k.
the real sterility thing is right at the beginning. you have to be ultra careful when your playing with the spores and the freshly sterilised jars etc.

I just finished with some quart jars mere minutes ago. I wash my hands, wipe down a knife for breaking up chunks, and go to it, colonized myc is pretty resistant to the shit floating around. I havent had a contam yet once its colonized. I dont bother with gloves for straw but when using dung I tend to wear gloves just because of its tendancy to stain the callouses on my hands after I wash it off. Sterility is paramount at other points in the process but cleanliness and moderate sterile conditions work for me during casing.

That's nice, is the colonised rye in the jar loose enough to be shaken out?
I'm gonna try out on friday....!
