Cacti Mites HELP!
    #2886985 - 07/13/04 05:13 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Hey Guys. I've noticed some mite like critters in my cacti soil. All of them, spread through watering I assume, bottom watering. I'm wondering what I should use to kill them. They are small off whites, yellowish flies that do not fly but come to the surface when I water. After watering eggs or larva can be seen floating in the water I used. I think eggs drip out of the soil onto the surface under the pots and hatch because I see little ones after a day or two under the pots. I'm wondering what I should use that is safe. I have a wide variety of cacti and do not wish to kill my valued lophs. Can I use a Systemic Housplant insect control substance or will this kill them? Any ideas and experiences would be welcomed. Thanks ahead of time. L8r.

Mites don't have wings, my guess is that it's some kind sciarid fly. These lay eggs in the compost and the larvae eat the roots of your cacti.

As an insectice, dimethoate and imidacloprid are both well endured and give little damage to the plants. Treat the soil with one of these two and the little buggers will be gone in two or three days.

You can also use thurigensis bacteria to kill fungus gnats and many other insects by mixing it up and pouring on the soil. One of the popular trade names is thuricide. I prefer to avoid chemicals if possible. This is also a great thing to use on whitefly. By spraying it over the leaves and undersides, it will prevent eggs from going on to become pupas.
