Aborts Why so many???

I did EQ on rye colonized over to straw and cased it 3 different ways, one with just colonized straw the other with 1/2 on vermiculite on the bottom and on the top of the straw the other the same but sealed with no ventalation, the others I covered them and let them breath, the airtight one died
So I now know these cases need some ventalation. but my pinning was primarily on the edges of the case and not much growth in the center, why would this be??? also if the humidity in the chamber is very high can this pose a problem?? if there is high humidity do I need to mist them?? and do I mist directly on the case??
I also have a shit load of aborts. more than full grown shrooms. What would cause this??? too much heat not enough moisture?? The first flush looks almost complete but I'm not too happy with the results about barely 1 ounce dried. and that is coming out of (2) 4 1/2 quart cases. now for the second flush, (I'm going to dunk these overnight in the fridge) do I NEED to use distilled water or is tap OK? and should I put more fresh vermiculite on top after does it matter?
I know there is a lot of questions but... I appreciate any feedback thanks.

Well, I'm not one of the shroom knowledge gods around here, but I'll go ahead and answer the questions I know...
>>also if the humidity in the chamber is very high can this pose a problem??
One time I accidently left my humidifier on for long enough it was almost raining in my terrarium... the next day, I had so many aborts it was insane, too much humidity is definately a problem
>>do I NEED to use distilled water or is tap OK? Do you trust your tap water not to have ANY contaminates in it? Do you trust it not to have any chemicals that may harm the mycelium? The human body is a much more resiliant to contams than mushies, so while it may be safe for you to drink, tap water is not a good idea for dunking shrooms. If you must use tap, at least boil the water for a fair amount of time to kill off as much as possible, but a gallon of distilled water is a couple bucks... would you want to risk your entire grow to save a couple bucks?
-------------------- Any and all references to growing are completely facticious, all pictures shown unless specifically stated are stock photographs found via google image search.

Well it could be humidity, not enough oxygen, incorrect temperature or any combination of the above.

Actually tap water is usually fine. Even treated city water should be fine to use. The chemicals that are used are in such a low concentration, mycelium will not be affected. Of course, water should be sterilized for maximum safety no matter the source...
Something is wrong with your growing conditions. If you are misting with peroxide, that can also be the problem... Double check your techniques and conditions...

Wow, that's way too high. If you are going to mist with H202, use about a 200:1 ratio. This is most likely what is casuing your aborts Imho.

Most definetly. Also, try to avoid misting even the bases of stems. Mist away from the stems, the casing will absorb it as a whole. It is best to give a few small mistings than one heavy one... Don't over-mist the casing either...

OK thanks for the advice, hopefully I can recover a bunch, on it's second flush.
I think I will be dunking these tonight or tomorrow.

Yes, too much heat and moisture.. It causes them to grow too fast hence the abhorts. Keep the temperature around 65. Don't use h2o2/water unless you have a *very* fine mist bottle. Try using a thicker layer of peat/vermiculite. Not enough oxygen can also cause this, so be sure to completely renew their air supply every day.

Most people use 10% h2o2/ 90% water... if they use h2o2... but 50/50 should work fine. So would 100% water in most cases.

Most people use 1:10 ratio for adding to perlite or to spray infected casings. I have read from that many people have aborts from daily mistings with H202 solution and half and half is extremely high. I believe that Anno suggested using 1:200 peroxide solution.

Daily misting of 100% water will also cause aborts. Once you have pins... it is more important to rely on humidity and not spray... or spray the walls of the terrarium.

We use 1:10 for most of our h202 needs, such as misting, dunking, adding to perlite/poormans pod, and whatever else you need.
Yeah I know that's the standard for bleach, but I'm pretty sure that Anno said that this is what he uses for peroxide as well. I may be mistaken, but I'll try to find where he wrote that.

Pretty sure it is bleach. 100% h2o2 wouldn't kill your myclea. But any droplets of any liquid could cause aborts.

so say you were plauged by a plethora of aborts...leaving an Ultra Sonic Hum. on all the time would be the likely culprit, correct?
