it costs around $30k a year to imprison an inmate, almost $20 billion dollars a year.

Why should somebody sit in there for life when they have killed, and have no use in society. You only run the risk of them getting out and killing again, or having them sit in their cell until they are 80 years old.

Not exactly.

You don't just walk in, drop your cash, and walk out. You must do the same paperwork as if you purchased your gun from a store.

Except that if you watch the movie, you actually DO see him filling out the paperwork.

Have you ever bought a gun?

It's not like he portrays it.

Try it. The education just might help you.

Actually, I'm pretty sure executions are more expensive due to all the appeals and whatnot they entail.

I think giving the state the power to kill people is dangerous, even though capital punishment may be warranted in some cases.

Capital punishment is nothing more than a desire for revenge, one of the basest human desires.  It does nothing to lower the murder rate.  If some asshole murdered someone I loved, I would love to see him/her get the chair etc, but if you look at it rationally there's no point.  Let them rot in jail, and if its discovered they are innocent at least they can get out.  It's not perfect, but the judiciary (in any country) is less perfect.

Here's an interesting essay on how hopelessy unfair the jury system is.

luvdemshrooms said he would prefer to see DNA evidence mandatory.  it's a start, but the final verdict relies on 12 dumbasses (generalisation alert )

Strict adherance to the second amendment would lower the violent crime rate in this country unbelievably. That is all.

To me it's just strange that the US government touts its freedoms so much, and yet they share many of the same characteristics (to a much lesser extent) of the countries they invade.

Your exactly right it is more expensive. But I am still for the death penalty. I would prefer they put in express lanes (this of course with only proof verified by DNA).
Everyone on death row gets a mandatory 4 appeals. Whether they want them or not. They can make further appeals also at your and my expense. Why? If they were convicted by a jury of their peers then why do they get all these appeals? Did the person(s) they killed get four appeals? The answer is NO. I actually agree with Silvers statement that someone on death row should get the right to eat a bullet or some poison.

Sometimes even DNA isn't enough, eg. corruption, tampering with evidence or just plain police bungling. You're putting your trust completely into the hands of the justice system to decide if someone dies or not. Even if you have all the safeguards possible in place, we humans still make fuck-ups. The chance of one innocent person dying is enough to make me reject the death penalty.

And the fac that it doesn't work as a deterrent.

What's to refute? Even the article says he filled out the paperwork. The scene in the movie does not accurately portray reality.

And I'll ask again.

Have you ever bought a gun?

A "no", it is.
