Concerns about massive Collybia colony of unknown species in backyard
    #28870778 - 07/19/24 01:16 AM (5 months, 26 days ago)

A bit of an odd question for my first post ever but- should I be worried about my monotub grows due to the massive Collybia genus colony of unidentified species in my backyard? In a poorly thought out attempt to identify the mushroom, I brought some indoors in a plastic bag. Maybe an hour after taking pictures in the open air in the same room as my monotubs, (I know I'm an idiot for that move) I noticed that the two specimens I collected had dropped white spores inside the plastic bag. From what I can tell from my super layman's perspective the spores had "activated" nearly instantly, formed a mycelial network, and started searching the bag for additional food. This occurred extremely quickly; quicker than the spread of any mold or fungus I've ever seen. I immediately disposed of the specimens.

For additional context I had attempted to determine the species, but in searching for the presence of sclerotia in the loose litter and soil I found that the mycelium had colonized a wide range of matter including leaves, twigs, bark fragments, acorns and associated acorn debris, the roots of St. Augustine grass, and even the remains of various insects. The colonization of leaves and acorn matter in particular turned the respective matter yellow and orange, respectively. I also found dense rhizomorph clusters. I've attached relevant, but somewhat low quality pictures to this post. Should I be worried about my health or those around me due to the aggressive nature of the spores? Thanks for your time.

So if you never noticed them would they have affected your health? Nope.

So now you've noticed them, do you think they will affect your health?

We live surrounded by any number of mold spores and mushroom spores  the only time I've ever been affected by a spore load was from Oyster mushrooms and that was from a tunnel of oyster columns fruiting.

Thank you for the non-answer. It concerns me because I've never seen them in this area before hurricane Beryl passed through and I've never seen a concentration of spore-dropping mushrooms this high. I'm talking about a colonized average sized suburban backyard with tens of fruiting bodies per square foot. Online sources have little in the way of documenting the variety of strata that this species can colonize and parasitize. The behavior the spores is also quite different from the mushrooms I'm familiar with.

Glad you saw my comment as a non-answer.

They will probably turn you into some sort of shapeshifter

:aweneck:

And your monotubs will devour you in your sleep

what aggressive nature of the spores? they dont have intelligence, they arent plotting your demise. just cause you didnt see them before just means the conditions werent right to fruit like they did, as you said hurricane came through, makes total sense as to what happened but as Deryl pointed out the meth has taken over and your paranoia is rampant.

Like DERRAYLD said: spores are ubiquitous.  Most are not pathogenic.  Nothing to worry about at all.

I also don't trust visible spores.
