the name of the game is pasteurization when it comes to casing soils. but, others and myself included have had fairly good success using "microwave pasteurization/sterilization". I've gotten away with only 5 minutes in the microwave before and it seems to stand up well with an hour-long pasteurization. Dunno if it's just luck or what but for now, I'm sticking with the microwave.

I've never sterilized my vermiculite but it seems to work ok. Of course, I keep it well sealed in its original bag.
