    #2886560 - 07/13/04 02:59 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

nice long subject..

i was having a nice disscusion with my brother yesterday..
cant even remember how it came up....

can anyone think of an evoltionary reason for questioning ones existence?
"should i be alive?" "why am alive?"  "should i kill myself?"

we came up with something but id like to see what u ppl think

i dont usually ask myself that type of question hehe....

i can't think of an evolutionary benefit that type of thought might have, either... at least not off the top of my head.

i think it probably just goes along with our urge to question.  although this urge wasn't really profound in the general world population until a few hundred years ago (when evolution of the human race was coming to an end).  oh well.  back to my pot.

:blazed:

We certainly have not got even one tiny step closer to answering that question than when the Greeks formally asked it many thousands of years ago.

In fact, the question may not even make sense and/or be unanswerable for all future time.

i think an evolutionary reason is that questions of any kind, especially those of this magnitude, push us to new limits of exploration. For example, if we had never asked what are purpose was besides eating and mating, would we ever have botherd sending space ships to the moon? or writing music? or any of the other things we do? Without some belief, or at least some hope of a higher purpose im not sure these things would have had any point or appeal.

Im not sure if this is an evolutionary nescessity but the question and pursuit of its answer definetly have alterd the course of our evolution.

And as for swami's statement, i think we have made steps, but we will never really KNOW the definitive answer. Kind of like how we can never KNOW if our scientific theories are correct, but some seem to work better than others.

well what we came up with was..
.. supose at some point suicide becomes nessisary due to lack of resources/space..
for the betterment of the species as a whole, some would need to die.

lol wow, so the evolutionary nesscesity for questioning your reason for living is that eventually were gonna need people to decide there isn't any?

didn't see that coming.
