Hi , This rat tells me; "I have read most if not all the CASING info on the shroomerys casing page. There is a little bit isnt there? I was just going to finally give it a try. So whats youre opinion on the most suitable casing recipe for my first shot. Ive got some 500ml cakes near ready to spawn. Also I might add " The rat went on! "I shall be using a poor mans pod and suspect the humidity will be a little too high any suggestions to counter this would be of great help too as I would love to have a contam free first try" Thanks on behalf of the rat......

Thanx Im going 50/50+ just one questionwith regards to this NEW UPDATE: Although most people, including us, have great success from using horticultural hydrated lime, some do not. They end up burning their mycelium or the mycelium just never colonizes through to the casing soil. We think perhaps the hydrated lime they are buying has a much higher alkaline level then then the Hi Yield brand we are using. Hi Yield brand is our preference and works great for us. But just to play it on the safe side, we are going to suggest you buy calcium carbonate. A ground calcium carbonate is a gentle buffer. Some brands of hydrated lime are not. Calcium carbonate is basically ground up limestone, a soil sweetener. It works just as good if not better then horticultural hydrated lime. Its a much safer bet as well. You should be able to find calcium carbonate in just about any garden supply store.
Why add hydrated lime to the recipe in the 50/50+ then go and say calcium carbonate works just as well or even better, a little confusing?? So my point is do you use the same quantity of CC as it states in the recipe for HL? Also the humidity..., I am using magashes model poormans pod with fishtank heater & bubbler any suggestions for reducing the humidity..?

AFOAF recommends jiffy mix. It's similar to 50/50, but already mixed and ph balanced.
Is it cool enough that you need a heater in your pod? Just taking that out will drop the humidity some. If that's not enough, you could put the bubbler on a timer. Or reduce the surface area of your water container.

Coir/Verm would be my choice. Verm is pH neutral, coir usually is, so a pH buffer is not always required. Mushroom piss can make it more acidic in later flushes, but a good dunk washes that out.
I would avoid peat, or composts with nutrients in, these tend to encourage contams. I always got Tric mould with peat, have not had a problem with coir/verm.

Matts, What are the consequences of using straight verm vs. verm/coir for example? Does the casing layer just not colonize as well?
