I think i might have contamination? help a newbie
    #2885723 - 07/13/04 01:22 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Well, it's been about 2 months since the mycelium has started to grow and i have no signs of mushroom growth yet.  I was reading about bactiria contamination, and read that wet slimy looking mycelium is not good.

now most of the jars look good, except some are more wet looking that others, like actual water in the jars ontop of the mycelium.  and a few jars have a very light yellow color in them, like sticking to the glass or pushed up against the bottem of the glass.

i got the jars and syringe from the internet. and i was very clean when i inoculated them.  after the mycelium started to grow i turned the jars upside down and they've been upside down since.

im just asking what you guys think i should do?  some of the jars dont look contaminated but this is my frist time also, so i dont know what to expect.  and i read something about putting the jars in the fridge, to shock the mushrooms into growing.  but i wanted to get a few answers from you guys before i do anything.

should i shock all of them, or smell the ones that might be contaminated, smell all of them?  lemme know

Don't smell them, don't put them inside the fridge.
It has been too long since you first saw mycelium, its growth as stalled for some reason or reasons: aging mycelium, substrate consistence and humidity, bacterial contamination, to name a few.
Can you take some pictures of those jars ?

after i inspected them i desided they all have a bacterial infection. any suggestions on what i should do next? maybe try a different way of growing or try the PF Jars again? any strains that are easy to grow. these were pink buffalo.

Dispose their content very carefully. Let the jars to rest inside a water:bleach tub for one hour and then wash them very well.
That is, if you want to reuse the jars ....
Anyway, i would stick with PF and try to succeed with that process. Any strain is good but if you want something more aggressive try Puerto Rican.

Why do you turn the jars upside down? It seems that this peactice would limit O2 - Co2 exchange, which will slow the growth. I've never had a problem with jars kept upright and covered with tinfoil, except when I was sloppy :nonono:

"Why do you turn the jars upside down? It seems that this peactice would limit O2 - Co2 exchange"

It's the opposite, this practice helps gas exchange but just when the colonization process reaches a good level (80%). It's not a good idea if you do it right after you see mycelium germinating, mycelium does need Co2 in early stages of its development.
The process is simple to explain, Co2 is heavier than oxygen, when you flip the jars, Co2 will escape through the holes on the lid and oxygen will enter and feed the mycelium which was previously at the bottom of the jar (now facing up).
But then again, timing is crucial, don't flip the jars right at the beginning of the process, wait until 80% of colonization then flip.
