Out of control
    #2885218 - 07/13/04 10:30 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

It pisses me off how you could work your ass off for years trying to achieve a goal and then have one tiny slip up that could ruin it all.
I guess that is the nature of life. Fragile. A car accident. A possession charge stripping you of your college funds and dooming you to minimum wage. Signing a piece of paper without reading the fine print. There are many pitfalls. Some avoidable and some unavoidable.
no investment seems safe.
we are little animals running from the thunderstorm. when the skies are clear we can fool ourselves into thinking that we're in control again.

but... still there is a joy in trying, right?

Yea, I'd venture to say all the joy is in the development

That doesn't piss me off... just a part of life. What gets me is the attitude that people have that somebody has to be responsible for everything that happens. Almost like they try to take the words accident out of the dictionary... which leads me back to your point... we all make mistakes, so why should an occasional accident, which could happen to any of us, screw us over for the rest of our lives?

The only way to win the game is to change your definition of the goal. If you percieve winning as being rich, respected, famous, loved, powerfull, happy at all times, healthy, attractive and enlightend, your gonna have a hard time.

If you percieve winning as enjoying the game, its alot easier.

to coin a phrase, the journey is the destination. plus, you never really get to the destination either, nothing is final.

Death is final. I killed a gopher last week and that was the end of his munching on the roots of of the $200 tree I planted. I checked yesterday and that particular gopher still hadn't gotten back up to start chewing on roots. Seems pretty final to me...

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Castaneda had an idea I liked. Everything you do is folly, but the average person is unaware of this fact. Once one becomes aware of this one should seek to give the folly a direction...controlled folly if you will. It is like the difference between someone who falls from a high place and a skydiver who falls intentionally while controling the rate of descent and the place they land. Many might feel Castaneda was a hack, but SOME of his ideas were very good.

actually i think he gives EXACTLY as much as he takes away. I think its some kind of physical/cosmic/logical law or something.

Unless... maybe the Devil gives us stuff just so God can take it away

huehue,
yea Castaneda has some intriguing ways of explaining his concepts.
whenever i read his books my brain starts to play twister with those thoughts.. I will actually only read it in small doses because of this.

I like how don Juan can appear to be another one of those beat-around-the-bush mystics with really vague general statements on spirituality, and then suddenly he'll catch you off guard and reveal something very cut & dry, cause & effect'ish. the story has a good dynamic like that.

It's all back to awareness or lack of it. For instance, most people are taught from birth to compete and judge their own character on the praise and blame of others. However the reality is that all of life is a cosmic creation and a divine gift, even if one doesn't believe in a higher reality. In any case, life isn't a bargain that one makes and then incarnates. Life itself is a gift, and so are all the things that go with it. With more awareness, especially of this fact one is able to be more happy regardless of circumstances.

Of course, when beings are suffering they find it hard to feel anything but the pain. And that is truely sad. I wish I had a million means to cure suffering beings. Unfortunately, each one has their own needs. If one can give relief though then they are one with the gift-nature of life.

All the small selfish deeds we do, to find at the end that life is through, are nothing compared to the joy we bring, when we give a gift of some small thing.

May your swerving from your hard worked goals make you more aware of the countless suffering beings everywhere.
