Is sleep necessary?
    #2884779 - 07/13/04 02:01 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Some of you may have noted that I never sleep and respond to most all posts accurately and succinctly and within a time frame not possible for a human. I am either:

a. an insomniac with no life and the fastest typist on the planet.

b. a robotic program emulation of a human.

c. an alien.

d. highly evolved and past the need for sleep.

e. a group of people masquerading as one entitiy.

When one is constantly in touch with the ground of being, no sleep is necessary.

I don't think it has to do with "ground of being," or whatever that means. Some people just require less sleep than others.

Yeah I think I heard Jay Leno say in an interview that he sleeps just 4 hours a night and that is enough for him. I need like 9-10 hours.

Sleep? What is that?

I almost said it was unnecessary, but then I remembered that I actually enjoy what sleep I can get.

I had an experience once where I thought a 5th dimensional being named Lynda was communicating with me, she said all kinds of crazy things like sleep is unecessary and that everytime someone falls asleep they fall back into ignorance and if you go beyond the need for sleep you become 5th dimensional, which is a constant state of bliss...

Oh, and I wasn't on drugs at the time, either.

I would say it's all about quality of sleep rather than duration. Some people will sleep for 14 hours and wake up feeling worse then when they went to sleep. Others can sleep for 2 and wake up completely rejuvenated. sleep is good though.. I don't want to hear any bad mouthing of sleep!

I was tripping the other night and thought, "hey, I am awake... I don't need to sleep. That desire is illusory."

And, I honestly thought I had finally broken through and become enlightened. However, I sobered up and went to bed.

I'm just lucky my delusion wore off and I didn't create a thread claiming such nonsense...

I definitely need my sleep. I've only been able to go for about 40 hours without it. I can't stand how my skin begins to itch and my eyes and inner ears start to tingle.

I can do all-nighters just fine. Most recently, I was reading Camus' The Plague and I realized that it was dawn. I tried laying in bed, but I just wasn't tired. So I took a shower and went to the gym. The whole next day was weird. I slept hard the next night.

I really enjoy getting at least 8 hours of sleep a day, and naps are fun too. Sleep and dreaming are very satisfying, and like DoctorJ said, they seem like extremely important aspects of my existence.

Perhaps you're all of those...

I NEVER get sleep either. I'm a hardcore insomniac, and it really never interfered with my life negatively. Just recently I started taking extra suppliments of calcium (coral calcium to be specific) and it has helped me sleep MAJORLY since Sunday. The first night I took them, I sleeped from 10PM-9AM and I felt soooo relieved. It felt like I increased by energy level by 10! I could have ran and never stopped that day.

Though last night I only received 3 hours sleep (which is much better than the usual 0 hours).

And perhaps your theory is right, when one is grounded the need for sleep becomes less crucial (though when I hit 11 days w/out sleep, it tends to get unbearable).

I can go for a while on 5 hours of sleep a night, and then about every 6 months, I crash and burn and can't move.  That's when it's time for an all-day movie marathon and then 12 hours of sleep.  Then I'm ready for another 6 months.

Preferably, I'd sleep 7 hours a night.

Actually, I hate going to bed.  That's my major problem.  If someone would go to bed with me, I'd probably sleep.

Can you prove that you don't sleep? Can you provide evidence that you do not sleep?

Simply being able to post on a board at any time, responding quickly is surely possible without proving a lack of sleep.

i'm one of those fucked up poeple that require 10-12 hours of sleep a night, and i wake up feeling worse than when i went to bed, and usually i don't feel "Awake" till about 4 hours after i wake up. if i don't get that much sleep a couple minutes after i wake up i start feeling sick (runny nose, sore throat, stomache aches, headaches) until i go back to bed or drink 5 cups of water and 5 cups of coffee.

when my sleep is interefered with is literally the only time that i get externally angry, hehehe, i often begin cursing and screaming when awoken and sometimes throw things (at my fucking noisy ass birds!).

there are exceptions to both statements.

sometimes I enjoy sleep more than waking reality.

When I dream, I am in an environment where everything is under my control.  I can build entire realities, and fill them with people, both fictitious and real.  I can fly, or turn myself into a car and go real fast.  I can have gunslinger showdowns and I always win and get the girl.  I cxan create drugs out of thin air and I never have a bad trip.  and when my bitchy ex-girlfriend shows up, I just snap my fingers and she turns into a sixpack.

compared to that reality kinda sucks if you ask me.  Sometimes I think of reality as a recurring bad dream

I know a girl at university who sleeps for about five hours a week. If she has a couple of nights in a row without sleep then she takes a pill to help. She's still very normal, and very intelligent. She never seems tired or anything.
Personally, I need about six hours a night, and like to stay in bed for nine or ten, just because I'm a lazy git.

Did anyone in the UK see that program where contestants had to stay awake for a week, and the last person to fall aslepp won loads of money? It shows that it can be done, if you want to badly enough!
I also remember reading that the longest a normal person has gone without sleep was eleven days. They might have stayed awake for longer, if it wasn't for the fact that chronic sleep deprivation killed them. I'll try to find out why they stayed awake for so long... (if that story is in fact true)

I completely identify with this.
My days are 32 hours. I'll sleep for 10 hours and I'll be up for 22. I keep thinking that I should try letting my sleep rotate around the entire day, but I have too much shit to do during the day.

Meher Baba Never slept a day in his life

Sleep is the beyond the beyond state of god existing as god but unknowing that it is anything at all.

basically the prosess of sleep is the same as any other prosess such as death and awakening and the "opening of ones eyes". Its all connected in a strange metaphysical way.

I saw bits of it, but not all of it. It wasn't 100% sleep deprivation - occasionally they would get told to sleep for 2 or 3 hours. After one of those nap sessions one of the guys insisted that he was the Prime Minister of Australia (pity he's not, Oz could do with someone other than Howard).

They talked about getting some 'visual disturbances' where things would warp or bounce, and I think some got tunnel vision at times.

The scientists involved with the show were somewhat suprised that there was very little in the way of 'reality distortion' aside from the Prime Minister moment (which occurred just after a short nap), and at least one person thinking they were in a London tube station at some point (which wasn't that suprising given the high brightness and stark surroundings).

Other than that, they were pretty much 'with it'. The girl who won it kept herself awake by purposely giving herself muscle cramps.

Oh yeah, there were some (fake) amanita muscaria's in the 'garden' area

i think biologically we were designed to sleep.

i read a story, however, about a civil war general who was shot in the head and was never able to sleep again. he still lived a normal life, except while eveyrone else was sleeping, he would lay in bed and convince himself that he doesnt need to sleep, his body would be just as refreshed if he laid there all night awake.

i think if you worry that youre not getting enough sleep then youre not, but if youre not worried at all and you believe what youre doing is right then you probably dont need it. its all about the way people obsess over insomnia that produces depression/psychotic states in which the stress level is extremely high.

In his book 'True Hallucinations', Terence McKenna claimed to go 9 days without sleeping or feeling the need for sleep. He was too busy thinking to sleep. I don't think he was tripping either. I mean he was tripping around that period but he definatley wasn't on drugs for the whole 9 days (other than probably a load of ganja). I guess theres no way to prove he actually did it though.

Definitely mind over matter, and convincing yourself you are sufficient without whatever the need may be.

As far as sleep is concerned, 20-35 minutes of meditation should make up for a least a few hours of sleep.

I believe through meditation, sleep is not necessary.
But of course, I speak for the moment, always an transcendental as possible ;-)

A plethora of music aspirations control my temptations of future revelations beyond "now". The percussion, and the heart beat of my love and devotion. The rhythm goes beyond, prying into the third eye, releasing the creativity held so far inside. The melodicies, through the out of tune pianos and broken classical guitars...there lies a beauty. A beauty as prevelent as the fire inside. To release these energies is pure ecstacy, to deveop these gifts is sacred. The vocality, so pure as can be, shying away from herself, lies within me. For the underlying serenitity, this is what I live for. I plea for harmony, and nothing more. Music equals love. Creation of love leads to the procreativity of the World, and it's spirals and puddles prevailing.

No way!!! The world record was less than 2 weeks. The official verified sleeplessness record is 11 days, set by high school senior Randy Gardner in 1964. Randy Gardner was "awake" but basically cognitively dysfunctional at the end of his ordeal. If you continuously deprive rats of sleep, they die after 14 days. 15 days would possibly kill you. I once had to remain awake during a military exercise in the Army for 3 days and it damn near killed me (exageration). This is merely an idle boast.

Well i'm sure the meth we were using would have helped in keeping us awake :x . Its a nasty drug. And i can assure 15 days of no sleep will not kill you, although it will produce quite a nasty comedown.

My reaction also... just thought I'd mention that when I started sleeping regularly for car-pooling reasons around 1993 or so, I felt like I was born again. I went through a sheet of blotter also, which may have colored my memories somewhat, but the sleep pattern remains and I try to stick with it since it's so obvious that a human being needs to sleep, once you get used to the idea.

Maybe the answer is
f. Swami has found a way to control the quantity and quality of his sleep, like anyone else can

Let me explain myself

We spend an average of 25 years of our existence sleeping.
The truly deep sleep, the one in which we really recover, doesn't last more than one hour per night and is split in 4 sequences that last 15 minutes each and come back every hour and a half. Those sequences are called REM sleep.
Sometimes, like alot of people here, you may sleep for ten hours straight without finding this deep sleep, and after ten hours have gone by you wake up feeling like shit, exhausted.

But if we knew how to precipitate as quickly as possible into the REM sleep when we go to sleep, we could sleep for an hour a day by going through all four sequences of REM sleep all at once, with no interruption, so that we could fully regenerate in no less than one hour.

How do we do this?

First of all, you have to be able to recognize your own cycles of sleep. For this, all you need to do, is to take note of the time of the first yawns of the evening, the first tiredness of the day, which usually happens at around 6 p.m., and from there you know that it will come back every hour and a half. These will be the precise moments of the passage of your train of deep sleep. If you go to bed right at that moment and if you oblige yourself to wake up three hours later (with an alarm clock), you can progressively teach your brain to compress the sleeping phase by conserving only the important parts of sleep.
This way we perfectly recover in a short amount of time, and you wake up feeling great.

One day, we will probably teach kids at school how to control their sleep.

i havent had any kind of "normal" sleep patterns since i was about ten or so...i sleep for about 30-45 min and wake up, wide awake, and cant fall back asleep for a few hours...i also sleep walk, wake up sometime and cannot move at all...i guess they call this sleep paralysis...anyway, i was gonna be a part of a study the university was doing on a new sleeping pill, but i got kicked out of it due to "potential health issues" once they saw that i had signs of rem behavior sleep disorder? never heard of it, but apparently its a rare sleeping disorder where the rem stage of sleep is all out of whack...i dunno, it never bothered me too much, but sometimes ill stay awake for 4 or 5 days at a time and life gets pretty rough then...sometimes i wont know if im awake or dreaming...

but ya, on average i get about 2 to 3 hours a night, at half hour intervals....seems to work alright for me 90% of the time
