Unicorn bag filter types
    #28844530 - 07/10/24 01:14 AM (9 days, 14 hours ago)

Starting to supplement and sterilize soon, switching to unicorn XLS bags for 10lb sub blocks. There are 3 types of filters to choose from: T, A and B.

T (0.2 microns) I suppose is for spawn
A (0.5 microns) advertised as "general, all-around" type. Surely suitable
B (5 microns) Fastest growth bot more risk

I will only run oysters so it will obviously be A or B. But which? Any recommendations? I know the difference but what I don't know is which actually works better. I mean, is the B type playing with fire or is it actually the one that'll do the job the best since I'm going to run oysters? Oh and I need the blocks to totally colonize in 14 days.

Edit: And have any of you tried the new Unicorn XLS Horizon bags? They're the same size than regular XLS but have a bigger, wide filter patch which is also located 1" higher than in the regular ones.

I use xlsa bags and for sure you can get full colonization of oysters in 10-14 days. Temperature is mainly what dictates speed of colonization.

I tried a handful of horizon bags but they are not for me. The filter got crimped in the zip ties I use to seal bags and reduced colonization times. Bags were not getting enough ge and mycelium at the bottom was dieing.

Thanks man. I think the A filter is what I'll choose. Not familiar with these type of bags as I've used perforated column bags so far. But if you say 10-14 days is enough (in a 68F room) I'll go for that and not take the risk with the B filter.

Do you find zip ties easy and quick to use? Well I suppose you do since you're using them. I was just sourcing a impulse sealer with magnetic hold but the cheapest here was about 350 bucks. And all the other options (without magnetic hold) were chinese rubbish. Not very nice options. Maybe I should try the zip ties too. Do you use the ties that can be opened and used again?

Yeah reusable zip ties works great for me. You're handling a bit more sub tho, maybe a little more than twice as much as me.

Cool. So you just crunch the bag closed with the zip tie or is there something more to it?

The notion of more sub refers to zip ties being slower than sealer I assume. I think I'll start with zip ties and see how it goes because I really don't want to buy unreliable chinese crap sealer or spend 400 euros on the magnetic one right away. I've used more than 10,000 zip ties on my column bags so far so I should be quite handy with them. We'll see if I get frustrated with them or not.

Xlsa bags ordered.

I fold the top of the bag over twice and then fold it in on itself until I can get a zip around it. It's not very time consuming but a good impulse sealer would be faster. Sometimes they pop up on market place or Craigslist for cheap.

Might be my poor english but I didn't fully understand your technique. Fold the top of the bag twice - got it. But "fold it in on itself" - got lost. So do you fold it like uhmm horizontally? Like you first fold the top, kinda vertically, and then the other way? Basically halving the width of the bag.

Actually I found one cheap used one which goes for nearly 400 euros new. It doesn't have the magnetic thing but I can live with that. But only doubt is that the seal is only 2.5mm wide. I've watched some (maybe Myers?) video where he told that 5mm is what you should go with. But then again, this thing should be very good quality so maybe the 2.5mm seal would hold as well.

Idk about whether 2.5mm will work as well as the 5 mm

But yes fold the bag downwards twice (about 1cm per fold) then bring both the right and left sides in folding them in half and in half again.

Yeah, I don't know either. I only have the myers vid reference on the seal width but I think 5mm is the usual width for bags. My hope lies in the 400e price tag which hopefully indicates good quality which might offset the small seal width. I guess I'll try it out. If it doesn't work I'll just try to sell it and buy a crappy chinese 5mm unit for 50 euros lol....and end up buying the expensive magnetic thing in the end after getting mad.

Until that I'll try the zip ties. Thanks for clarification, I understood you right. I will try that method. Cheers!
