P. eryngii: How to initiate fruiting?
    #2880720 - 07/12/04 01:46 AM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Hi guys.

How do I initiate the fruitbody-production of pleurotus eryngii? I have placed a culture into a plasticbox with a high air humidity but there is no primordia forming so far. Temperature is approx. 20 degree Celsius.
Do you think i need to cold shock them? Perhaps dunk them in ice-water like Shiitake?

greeting
S.

Hey there SL.
Being an oyster I'd try to drop them to around 15'C for a day or two this should initiate fruiting from what I've read so far.

Mine where fruiting when the temperatures were between 10-16 degrees Celsius.
I think 20 degrees Celsius is too warm for this strain.

Ok, but isn't there a outher way to intiate fruiting? The problem is, that there is no lower temperature in my flat than 20 degrees Celsius...
I could place the culture in the cellar but there is no light. Any ideas?  :frown:

I am not sure, but maybe you could cold shock them for some time.
What's the temperature in your basement ?
You could put them in your basement and use some artificial light?
Otherwise I would put them outside and wait till the temps are getting lower.

Try frequent cycles of cold-shocking, then normal temperatures. If you can keep it from contaminating, it should fruit in due time... I don't think your temperatures would be too hot as to totally inhibit fruitbody formation...

Try a light in the cellar if all else fails...

Ok, i will try it with cold shocks. Do you think it's better to place the culture in the fridge or should I dunk them?

Here's a picture of my culture(date of shooting 06. july):

What is the medium inside the jar?
Oh and, you'll love this mushroom.

@YidakiMan

The medium is sawdust with gypsum and meal. Did you successfully fruit the eryngii?

Here are two new pics:

A close-up from something that looks like primordia. Could this be?  :smirk:

Looks like the beginning of primordia to me, aggregates...
If it is doing that on incubated agar (not refrigerated), then I think you should have no problem fruiting them...

Sounds good!  What you see on the picture is the culture by the way, not a incubated perti dish.
Hope there will be soon more such pre-primordia.

Oh, it looked like the edge of a dish to me. By culture you mean?
In any case, it appears to be more aggregates in the first picture as well pressed againsed the glass (although you can see better than I). How do you plan on fruiting it?

How do you mean this? The culture stands in the plastic box. Fresh air exchange two or three times a day and also watering every day with 0,20% H2O2.
Perhaps I take yet another photo this evening.

All I got to say is that they fruit at around 70 to 80. Give em plenty of air and some humidity. No cold shock needed for this strain. Three air exchanges isnt enough. They should have fresh air nonstop.

I had three P. Eryngii straw blocks inside. I made straw blocks supplemented with roughly 5% cottonseed meal. They were being a pain indoors. They aborted two flushes. I moved them outside and got two NICE FLUSHES so far. Its been in the 70-80s and rainy as hell here.

I am starting a new generation of spawn of p. eryngii spawn today. I am planning on 2 logs, a half dozen trays and a rubbermaid or two. I want to see if the yields are better on a log or in trays cased or uncased.

I really love this mushroom. Yields on straw are low, but straw + cottonseed meal is cheap enough to process lots. Stamets is right, this is a mushroom that deserves considerable commercial research.

Early this spring I have grown some P.eryngii on newspaper.
The paper was not supplemented and the P. eryngii only started to fruit when I buried them in the soil outside.
I think they get some nutes they need for fruiting out of the soil.
So far I got two flushes when the temp was between 10-16 degrees Celsius (50-60 Fahrenheit).
Here are some pics of the P.eryngii growing out of the soil.
When it comes to cooking mushrooms I like Flammulina velutipes and P.eryngii best. Especially when they were grown outdoors.

In my limited experience, most strains, and certainly oyster types, do way better with the fresh air.

Ok, think I will wait a few more days and when there's no fruiting sign I'll try it without the box and more fresh air. Hope the culture won't dry out...
I'll keep you up-to-date.
