Watching rockets launch
    #2884289 - 07/12/04 10:38 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Does anyone else find this facinating? I guess you would first have to live in an area where it was possible, but if you do, do you take the time to watch? I am gonna go out in the early morning tommorrow (about 5 1/2 hours from now) and watch the launch of the AURA satellite aboard a Delta II rocket. This will launch from Vandenburg AFB in California. Although this is a couple hundred miles from me it will still be visible here as it climbs into space. I have seen many launches from this site here in Vegas. The best are evening launches (the hours right after dark) when the smoke trail is backlit by the setting sun. This one tommorrow will not be as spectacular being a morning launch, but still neat. I'm gonna try to get a picture. If it turns out I'll share it.

Am I the only fool who'll roll out of bed at 2 am to watch a rocket go off? Anyone who lives in the areas North of L.A. would have a much better view than me. Do you ever bother to watch these launches? Or if you live in Florida near Canaveral, do you watch the launches there? I don't know why I enjoy it so much. I guess I'm just a kid that never grew up...

Here is the site for upcoming launches at Vandenburg. After the launch in the morning the info on the AURA satellite will not show here.

Here is a link for info on the AURA satellite.

I used to live in the LA area, and we never like watched them on purpose, but I saw one really spectacular one that happened right around sunset. It was pretty amazing. I can't describe it very well because it was like 15 years ago or so, and hadn't thought about it in years until I read this. Thanks for reminding me.

If I lived near a place where rockets were launched, I'd definitely watch. Don't think Norway's gonna be the next nation that embraces spacetravel though. I'm gonna come over.

Well, the launch was postponed (some problem with the rocket).  All three sites which I am monitoring say it will now go off tomorrow.  So once again I will get up at 2 am, pick up my buddy, and go to our "veiwing area" to observe.  If they don't make it tomorrow I'm gonna have to give up.  I can't keep getting up so early!

But such are the perils of being a stargazer.  We (me and my buddy) are always going out to catch astronomical and man-made events.  We make it a point to catch a couple metor showers each year (the Leonids in November are awesome).  And these rocket launches are always fun, but not very reliable (as you can see).

I even like to go out and watch the ISS (International Space Station) pass over once in a while.  It still amazes me that I can see it so well when it passes!  I even got to see the Space Shuttle following the ISS across the sky once (en route to docking with it).  Here is a site which will let you track man made satellites and tell you when they will pass over you.

Yeah, that Saturn V was an amazing piece of machinery!  I've never had a chance to see one in person.  My dad was in Florida last summer and saw one there.  He said its almost too big to comprehend when you walk up to it.  That would've been bitchin to see one of those fuckers go off!  The worlds largest roman candle!

As I feared, it did not go. Once they start having problems with a launch it gets pretty unpredictable. Looks like I'll end up missing this one because I ain't getting up this early every damn day (the launch window is the same time each day...3 am).

But I feel the need to post at least one photo so here is a picture of Las Vegas (Luxor and Mandalay Bay resorts) from my "in-town" observation area.

I go out to the desert if I need dark skies but from this point I can see a lot. It is actually a storm water retention basin just west of the Strip. You can be at the Mandalay Bay in about 3 minutes from here.
