Would it be unsafe ...
    #2883256 - 07/12/04 08:33 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

... to run a computer if it's CPU fan is missing three analogous blades?

I just want to make sure I don't fry my CPU before I get a new fan. (I'm not on the computer in question right now)

CPUs heat up pretty fast. See if your bios has a temperature monitor for the CPU, if it does, make sure it's on. I would avoid running the computer until I got a new fan. If you're desperate, get a room fan, open up the case and have it blowing directly on the CPU's heat sink (but I really don't know if that's such a good idea). Whatever you do, do not run it without a heat sink.

I don't think that would be a good idea. A cpu fan is focused. A room fan would not be.

Perhaps if he's set up to monitor the cpu temp?

I wouldn't risk it. Being without a computer for a few days is better than buying a new CPU. Having said that, once my CPU fan went out, and I hung a case fan on the heatsink. It's a socket A, so it looked a little sloppy, but it did the job.

My cpu has been overheating for a long time but I still haven't fixed it. I certainly will soon because I don't want it to break plus I just can't take it anymore.

But as for right now, does anyone know how I can monitor the temperature or something?

Well the fan still runs, it's just missing a few blades, heh ...

I think I'll just wait till I get a new fan though.

I actually removed my stock heatsink and fan and have a 120mm case fun running at reduced voltage blowing through a duct onto an aftermarket heatsink on my CPU. I did this to reduce noise while providing adequate airflow (I have my computer set up for recording music).

If your motherboard has overheating protection, then you can run the CPU. If the fan has blades in a balanced fashion, then it should be fine. You should get a new fan ASAP, or just a new HSF in general.

www.thermalright.com for the best air cooling you can get.

Run and configure MBM 5 (do a google search for it) and monitor your CPU temps. General rule of thumb: CPU is OK if not above 50C for Intel Pentium 4 and 60C for AMD Athlon.
