casing colonization
    #2882000 - 07/12/04 12:05 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

afoaf has 3 casings in a fruiting chamber that have been there for almost a week and myc growth hasn't really exploded...it has actually seemingly stopped. multiple spots were visible poking through the casing layer after a couple days of incubation so they were patched and put in the fruiting chamber to innitiate pinning. myc started to permeate the top layer again after a day or two but since then there has been no noticeable growth. the healthy looking myc spots now look like when a rootbeer float sits around too long and the fizz kind of looses body and appears to get thinner/dissolvy looking (i know, bad description). so if anybody knows what conditions are causing this i'd like to know so i can change things around. thanks!

Too wet a casing mix, contamination, poor environmental conditions. It could be any one of those things. Check conditions, keep an eye on them, and play the waiting game...

i think it may be too wet...there are water droplets collecting on the container just above the top casing layer. there are no visible contams.

You should be able to tell if it is too wet by looking at it, but it takes experience. Mycelium growth through casings like this is very fine and whispy. Appearing very weak, and sometimes slowing to the point of almost stopping if the problem compounds...

Stop misting, enhance evaporation until the casing returns to normal moisture levels. Then proceed as normal through the fruiting cycle...

thank you...would a running a small fan, cracked through the terrarium lid, for a bit do the trick in evaporation some h20?

I personally would not do such a thing. You could very well blow plenty of mold spores in there. If the casing layer does indeed appear too wet, crack the lid for a day or two. That should do the trick...

I also forgot another tip that may provide useful:
Make sure there is no standing water in the grow chamber, even dry it out if necessary. If there is excess humidity present that also has to evaporate, it will slow that of the casing...
