blueing reaction
    #2882086 - 07/12/04 02:27 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Everything I've read here about the blueing reaction says that it is not a guaranteed identifier for an active mushroom, and I have many times found poisonous boletes which bruise blue.

My question: Are there any known gilled mushrooms which bruise blue that are not active?

2nd question: In the active species it seems that the most potent specimens bruise a darker blue. Is there a corrolation between the intensity of the blueing reaction and alkaloid content?

Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

Yes, there are a few inactive gilled mushrooms that will bruise blue-green upon handling. A few that come to mind are Lactarius, Cortinarius, and the Gilled bolete.

As far as bluing to psliocybin correlation... Yes, it's a safe bet to guess that the darker and more abundantly something brusises blue, the more potent it is.

Stijve has disproven the thery that the bruising blue is an indication of potency. IT is only an indication of psilocine oxidiseng.

Your body needs to convert psilocybine into psilocine thrugh amination before you get off.

Can i also ask (not trying to thread-jack) why/how a mushroom bruises blue if it is NOT psychoactive?
Thanks

There are several mushroms which do blue naturally because that is there color.

Stropharia aeruginsa, S. caerulea, etc. Lacterius deliciousus has a green stain in it.
Boletes have a porous bttom rather than gils d so they can be discarded,. Some Russulas are bluinsh and someo other species. Not all psilocybe species ina single family get bluig in them as see by phtos posted at my site. NOt every cube brusise blue when damaged while baeos, yans (Psilocybe and Copes) become extremely blue as do several other species.

I am sure Toxic can add further info regardig thsi mater or read the books by Lincoff ad Mitchell or Rumack and Salzman.
