up to what temperature can spores handle before dying?

I wish psychedelic mushrooms were legal, because I would like to indulge in this amazing fruit of the earth. Unfortunately, I can only learn about this interesting hobby, and cultivate legal mushrooms.

I believe 106F Max, but I do not know the duration of exposure at that temp...

Spores can handle higher temps than that.

Mycelium might have problems at that temp but spores are much more durable.

Hmm. That makes two of us that would like to know now. What exactly is "higher temps than that" in degrees and exposure times?

Wonder where I got 106F from...

You got the 106?F from Stamets, Psilocybe cubensis Growth Parameters, "Thermal death limits have been established at 106?F", for mycelium.

I don't know.

I've heard stories of spores being viable after long term exposure to some pretty extreme temps.

I had one guy complain on a free print I sent saying it didn't work and I thought at the time -- as it was high summer with temps over 40C (well above 100f) in the shade -- that maybe it was fragged in a letter box sitting all day in the sun, where temps inside can indeed go even higher.

But another guy sent same time, from the same batch of Golden Teacher prints, managed this. He made a spore syringe and his very first attempt at shrooms on wbs no less. So obviously the "complaint guy" was just lame, and not the print.

[edit to add the pic, seeing OG won't allow off-site gallery view]

I don't know what top temp spores can take, but up to 45C I know they can take, and maybe even over 50C for a short duration.

They'd have to be pretty hardy to survive in a cow patty through an Australian summer. Over 40C at times (104+F) and probably warmer in a dark patty.

Make sure you remember that the jars have a higher temp inside and it is about 1-5 degree warmer than the air in the incubator

This is after colonization has begun. Until germination, incubator temperature is the same as jar temperature. Metabolism from the mycelium will raise internal temperature a bit.
I'm sure spores could survive for short periods of time at high temperature; just take sic8's point...But I'm sure only the hardiest spores survive, so I'd assume it's sort of like a natural selection thing. For storing spores, you should keep them cool and in a dark place.

OK a very old thread but I glad it was brought back up I see the question never got answered sorry I must have been sleeping all these years! Thermo death limits for mycelium is 106F and spores is 122F (50C).
Now this is the point where degradation begins extended duration of exposure is what we want to avoid.
