There are thousands of species of mushrooms. You odds of a newbie just walking into the woods and picking several kinds are astronomical.

Your best bet is to hook up with an expert from your local mycological society, or if there isn't one, a professor from a nearby college, and take them your "catch" for identicifation. Naturally you're looking for edibles and wanting to weed out any "toxics"...wink wink. As far as distribution of magic mushrooms, there are several published lists giving reasonably accurate notes as to state by state occurences. Unfortunately, "plain" varieties do outnumber the magics by a huge margin. There could be thousands of varieties growing in the local woods and MAYBE one of those is magic.
