If you’re planning on growing a lot of pans long term it’s probably worth clone hunting. JOC, JCM and a couple other guys had some insanely productive cultures they kept around. I remember some that were like canopies for three flushes.  Generally though pans are so potent getting a huge yield isn’t that important ime.

It's definitely worth saving a culture that's producing, just never arrived at it via cloning.
It's a Catch-22. By the time I get to a place where clones seem like a good idea, I already have a good culture.
Cloning some nice fruits from a weak flush is a crap shoot to me. Why limit genetics at this point?

Yea thats kind of how I feel. Any culture thats produced has been a good enough culture for me.

Cloning is also a good way to save genetics.  Like, the bisporus I've been posting pictures of all came from MS.  I took clones last night.  Less trying to pair down that good flush and more just wanting to run these again.

Also, cloning to BRF pucks.  I'm over fucking around trying to get tissue samples out of tiny fruits.

Lmao yeah cloning pans is a pain in the ass. I just accepted there was going to be bacteria on the initial plate after a while.

My thing with saving good cultures is with ms stuff I feel like it’s too easy for the genetics to drift, with clones that have been isolated it stayed more consistent. Though to be fair I never put the time in isolating ms stuff very much and always grew them asap.

One of the two trays I just mentioned.  I took clones yesterday but will probably grab some more this morning.

Nicest flushes I've had so far.  Hoping I can dial these genetics in to give meatier fruits by jumping up to a 10 cup soup container and switching the grains out for corn.

Edit:  Going to clone/swab this cluster.

And this was the rest of the tray directly above.  Not bad for four cups of aio substrate.

I like to use my 16 gauge needles for cloning small fruits just kinda scrape it out of the stipe. It’s amazing how little tissue you need, sometimes can’t even see it. I do the same for pulling the fastest rhizo growth on a plate with cubes by getting just the tip 😉

It was two killer flushes!

So I just checked both of those trays.  And both of them are grass seed.

The tray on the right is also grass seed but on horse manure.  The fruits are meaty on that one.  The millet has barely pinned.

And here's the millet trays of leaf compost on right, black kow on left.

I ordered some hullless popcorn to try.  Grass seed is too expensive.  And I don't think they're getting much nutrients from my millet.

But it could have been me over saturating these casings, though I suspect they'd have caught up by now.

Grass seed is bomb though.  Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, you told me that, and then mycosmith posted Mystery SA they've been running on corn too.

Aspect, I was going to simmer it for 45-60 minutes until mostly hydrated, rinse, drain, load not completely dry.  Like I do rye, but with a longer simmer and skipping the soak.  But I've never done it, so this is just based off reading old threads on corn/popcorn.  I ordered a firm and a tender variety of hullless popcorn.  I imagine I'll have to play with it a bit.

Grass seed and millet I've been washing/rinsing/soaking and then straining and running in AIO substrate jars.

How I do it:

Fill pressure cooker with desired amount of popcorn, fill with water about 2.5-3in above the popcorn. Cook at 15psi 25min. Strain and let dry in the strainers for 1-2hr, shaking every 15min. Jar up, PC 15psi for 2.5hr.

Latest batch I added 1 shot glass corn syrup to initial PC but don't have results yet since I made them yesterday.

Edit: Don't know what else needs to be added to pan jars if anything, am a noob that has only grown cubes.

I’ve never done popcorn. I have some sitting around. I was thinking about trying a little myself today and was just going to look up a video on YouTube.

@treefrog I have some mystery SA going on brown rice and it’s doing really well. I can’t recall if I have any on feed corn. 🧐 I need to check

Yeah?  I'll try that next time.  I did think what I was doing was overkill but I didn't realize it was that overkill lol.

And thanks for the link.  I'll check out your prep and maybe I can track rye grass seed down for a decent price.

Found a recipe on Instant Pot Hominy.

They suggest soaking overnight.  I think I'm going to try that and start with 15 minutes for the smaller kernels.  Thanks for the idea of using the PC!  I forget I have an InstaPot

For popcorn, I used to soak 24hr, boil 1 hr, dry the grains for an hour then load and PC. I never got around to low prep corn but I might have to revisit it. Low prep RGS is 2:1 seed:water by volume.

Really pretty Tree Frog!
