Went back to my friends place. They have a big wood chip pile from cutting down a few pines two years ago and when I had a look at it this time I found a 1.5 square meter canopy of actives growing in the grass right in front of the pile. I saw it just before dark when I arrived and thought I would take photos and grab them the next day. Was heading out to do a job in the morning and when I came back they had a landscaper putting in drainage pipes and my mate asked the digger driver to turn over the wood chip pile.
Everything was destroyed but one single mushroom
I am mostly bummed out that I couldn't get a picture. I am sure they will be back next year or maybe even before the end of the season. There was still plenty to pick where they had spread the chips and mulched the garden beds. Interesting was that the most mushrooms were growing in the grass and and only a few directly on the chipped beds. Picking twice got me almost a fully packed liter jar of dried fruits. Will be going back there in a couple of weeks.

Sorry for jumping in over mr blazer... but pretty sure you're referring to his pic of some rather moist looking ps subsecotioides. They are like half sub half wereroa.

I found something similar to them but they don't bruise blue so I am guessing they aren't active. I am too leery of anything that isn't easily recogniseable to pick it and too lazy to go through the process of getting an ID as there are plenty of subs around ATM but I was curious about them as they look very edible almost like pasta. Thanks for the ID.

Clan of the black hand,

or Brotherhood of the blue hand Those "sterile" gold tops (they look like cymbals to me) stain my hand blue more than black.

lol yeah when they stain the hands blue it is rather hard to clean off aye, should get a black shirt and rub your spore covered hands all over them to help spread the spores everywhere.

KOH gets most things off quite effectively.
Just rinse before the itchy become too burny or you might wash off more skin than intended.

Howdy folks… have spent a week of solid foraging with not much success. But stumbled across this little fella in my backyard a few days ago.
The dried looking one is what I found within about 50cm of the little one. It had the blue bruising and blue edges. I’m guessing cyanescens as the cap was wavy or could be a sub?
The little fella…I can’t take a proper picture yet as it’s bent over from a hard night on the turps. I’m just letting it grow out in the hopes it can drop some spores?
Anyway got no real idea what I’m doing but I’m completely fascinated with this tiny little golden goodie!
Hope it’s the real deal when it matures a little more. It’s an area where we stack wood..damp ground. Looking through the grass I can see patches of mycelium networks.. pretty cool.

went for a hike yesterday, found some wereroa and a single aucklandiae. Weird thing with the aucklandiae was it was on top of a volcanic cone so presumably no clay there which i thought was what they usually grow in. went back for another look today but wasn't able to find anything else

Stumbled across these while putting out stem butts.

Interesting. Just to clarify. Are you saying that you were not in the vicinity of Riverhead forest when you discovered the singular specimen?

bookface has killed the shroomery, yes, about the only thing i use bookface for is the mushroom pages... there doesn't seem to be much engagement between posters here like there was a few years earlier. With the bookface people can comment and whatnot on each others post and there are a lot more nz specific answers/content and youre more likely to see curious finds that people are making in nz, like those weird oviod looking things that popped up in christchurch the other day.... in some ways i prefer shroomery but it is a lot less user friendly.. I saw a Xenn on there recently, which i though was likely you. Do you keep an eye on any of the pages? No i wasn't in the vicinity of riverhead forest, i was on top of an old volcano near whangarei. I know someone else who has also found aucklandiae close by, in a different forest. Apparently they've been found as far north as Russell, also dargaville, coromandel, great barrier. I went back the following day and found no more. Worth noting that the finds in native forest that i know of have been close to kahikatea..
