Irrometer (tensiometer) for checking field capacity?
    #28787572 - 05/25/24 01:19 PM (1 month, 1 day ago)

Long time, no post. I've been putting a lot of my time into cannabis cultivation, so myco work has fell by the wayside the last couple of years.

One of the tools in my cannabis tool belt is my tensiometer. For those not familiar, a tensiometer measures soil moisture tension in kPa (or Bar). That pressure reading can be interpreted by the grower to know how wet (or dry) a particular soil mix is.

I'm gearing up for another grow soon and during this preparation phase (i.e going through old notes when I was regularly growing) I thought I'd fine tune my old procedures. Anyone ever used one of these for checking field capacity in their substrate? My old tried and true method is weighing each block and then multiplying that weight by 3.5 to get how much water in mL to add, but my theory is, coir can vary in quality among providers and batches, so not all will have an equal capacity for holding water.

I'll be testing things out my next run, so I'll update this with my findings, but it will be quite a while before I get to the point of testing FC in coir as I havent put any spores to agar yet.
