Using sugar cane bagasse as a substrate

Hi, I am completely new to mushroom cultivation and looking to grow gourmets to sell, I live in the Caribbean where straw and other common substrates are limited and expensive. I’m looking to use sugar cane bagasse as it is abundant from sugar production in my area.

I’ve tried my best to research the topic but haven’t gotten very far, if there are any in depth links or threads that I could be referred to it would be appreciated.

Question 1 - I think that bagasse needs to be supplemented with protein and nitrogen based off what I’ve read. People have reported using just bagasse but with decreased yields. What are some good, inexpensive supplements I could use?
I have a free supply of horse manure but I’ve read that in some cases it’s best to stay away from it due to contams and I plan on growing indoors so not keen on having to smell it all the time.

I’ve also read that most substrates don’t need supplements if used with a large ratio of grain spawn to substrate. I plan on trying white millet and wild bird seed as spawn but will there be enough nutrition using let’s say a 1:5 ratio?

Question 2 - Is sugarcane bagasse + supplements enough? I’m not sure if it would hold enough water and was thinking to use paper products and cardboard as well. I’ve read Stamets book where he briefly talks about bagasse and he stated that bagasse makes a good complement for wood based substrates which is why I think paper products would be a good addition.

Question 3 - Has anyone tried using bagasse before, how did it go? What did you mix with it?

I’ve ordered everything I need to get started growing and will begin on agar hopefully next week, will do some experimenting with it after I’ve gotten to grain spawn but trying to get some insights so I don’t have to experiment too much.
