It was labelled Gymnocalycium schreiteri, I bought it when I first started some lophs thinking I'd be able to keep them together so they're less obvious. It was a silly plan, they just look so absurdly different next to each other

It’s not a silly thing at all. I personally think that’s a great plan, you just need to keep the cactus addiction going! Now it’s still in its infancy stage… but You might eventually have a whole litter of different species, where the lophs are the minority. In the midst of all those cacti, I’d doubt anyone would recognize them. so many species, that ppl don’t even know where to look. Either way, it’s a nice outfit of green boys!

I have a serious plant addiction in general, but the cacti have been creeping in for sure... I've got a couple flats of pereskiopsis that I'm gonna try grafting bridgesii seedlings on soon. Maybe next weekend, but so much to tend to in the spring!

Right on! Those really are looking gorgeous and happy
So here’s a fricii that I’ve had outside for a about a year or two. This year it bloomed nicely for me, and I even got a fruit (presumably from a fricii x caespitosa paintbrush cross) But after a few hard days of rain, she started to look a little rough. Darkening around the edges and feeling a little squishy. I also thought I saw some small bugs in the soil… so I pulled her up for further inspection, and to later replant in a fresh rock mix. Before putting her outside 1-2 years ago, she was indoor under a light. Sadly my whole indoor cacti patch was Hit with root mealies really bad and I lost quite a few things. This girl sat bare root on a folded paper towel for several months. Inspecting the roots often and rinsing them under the faucet with a flashlight, to seek out any possible root mealies it inevitably healed up and beat it, so she graduated to the sun. Hopefully everything is cool and she can go back out again soon.
Anyhow, back to the paper towel. And two days in, she threw a bud. It’s opened half way and that’s about it. Luckily I had a caesp bloom going and could try and utilize the fricii pollen for a cross. Def worth a shot, but who knows how fruitful it will be in the end. It’d be interesting if it fruited though, because this time the male counterpart of the genetics would be coming from the fricii onto the caesp, and not the other way around like I had previously done.

Some old and some new. Some of these are going outside this year, but it's cold and rainy, so they're in a tent for now.
