1. How much distance should be between the floor and tubs/grain/ect.?
2. Is there a significant benefit to soaking grains w coffee and gypsum?
1. Maybe I misunderstand your question, but I set my tubs on the floor.
2. I’ve not found any benefit to coffee at all, and in fact think it promotes contamination. Gypsum I can take or leave. I haven’t noticed any benefit, but it doesn’t hurt anything.

A great write up on gypsum.

1. I keep them elevated at least a few inches because my floor is cold. And heat rises, but long story short it doesn’t matter.
2. Even if there was some insignificantly small benefit from it, it’s not worth the hassle. So again, long story short it doesn’t matter.

Thanks yall, idk if a lot of people go through this but I picked up a ton of shitty advice/habits early on in my growing journey and most of my improvement has come from doing way less.
Had the epiphany today that I was probably wasting precious coffee when I did a grain run, thank you all for the confirmation <3

I'd probably keep colonizing grain jars off the floor, but tubs no problem

There used to be a pretty healthy contamination forum.

Hello. I have just inoculated my second set of jars. Things are speeding up real quick and I need to start thinking substrate. I'm using the hitchhikers guide and the the pan pacific coir blaster. I had a couple questions.
I have a 66 qt totes how many bricks of coir for 1 bin?
I was following the guide completely but is the 2:8 plus 2 of casing noob friendly?
Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!

In my 66 qt tubs I personally use 3qt spawn to 9qt sub plus 2 qt top layer well compacted. Take in account a heigher sun to spawn ratio can be tricky if your not certain your spawn is clean. It will take longer to colonize giving any nasties the time to take over.
Edit: after a brain fart I realize that I’m referencing my 50 qt tubs at the numbers I stated. 🙄 I do have some 66qt tubs but don’t use them anymore. There huge and I can only fit one on my self.

I'll give that ratio a try! My new jars are actually only half full and there's 6 so 3qts is probably what I'm looking at in spawn. I'll try this even though it will probably thin a little due to surface area.
Do you know how many bricks of coir that would be?
Also, is the reason you stopped 66qt just due to space or are there other negatives?
Thank you so much for the response!

You could do one brick mixed with spawn and half a brick for top layer. So 1.5 roughly. I had success doing this with cvg. I highly recommend it if your room is dry.
Edit: this method takes a little longer so your spawn needs to be absolutely clean. If it's not, go for a lower ratio so things can colonize faster, and a smaller tub.

The only thing 50 vs 65qt will change is the depth. I’d use the same amount of sub/spawn for both. The only difference is I’d keep the depth of the top layer the same regardless of the tub size. So for example if you wanted a 1” top layer in a 66qt I’d also want a 1” top layer in a 50qt. It would only change the amount of sub you reserved for the top layer, not necessarily the amount of sub you made.
1 brick of coir and 2-3qts of verm will be perfect for any tub you make from 50qts to 66qts. No need to overthink it. I really have never even bothered to consider my ratio.
6 myco quarts is about 3 full quarts give or take and that’s perfect for tubs in the 50-66qt range. Your spawn to sub ratio is the exact same in both scenarios, your depth is the only thing different and even that isn’t worth enough to worry about.
I have enough on my mind at all times, trying to tweak recipes based on the volume of my tub isn’t something I need to heap on the pile. I just take the same recipe and scale down an appropriate amount when doing something small like a shoebox or something similar.

I have 2 out of 4 bags that look like they're healthy and taking off fast after a break n shake.
I have two 66qt tubs and some 12qt tubs.
Think I should go for 2 66qt or try a 66qt and 2 12s?
I'm guessing ratios in lb would be basically the same as quarts?
3lb spawn, 9lb sub if doing 1:3?

My justification for doing smaller tubs is if I’m just hunting for clone candidates or if I have multiple jars but some are questionable in terms of cleanliness. Putting single jars to shoeboxes is more likely to spread the risk around and not cross contaminate otherwise healthy jars.
However, in your case you’re talking about bags. So if a bag is fucked, spreading it around is going to lead to the same fucked up result. So there’s really no benefit of doing 2 12s vs putting them both to 2 66qts. If you have clean spawn, in my opinion, you’re going to get more bang for your buck with less work by doing two full sized tubs.

Makes sense to me, thanks.
If doing 66qt with a slower growing strain, should I do coir and verm? Or just coir?
Got some apes colonizing the bags.
