Casing as Flat Cake?
    #2878290 - 07/11/04 04:33 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I have three casings (KS on popcorn cased in straight verm) that are approaching 4 weeks with no signs of pinning. I've posted about these before and tried the advice I've been given, added air exchange, changes in humidity, etc. Nothing has even caused formation of knots. Having had success in the past with casings I'm really at a loss.

Given that cakes are easier to fruit, I was thinking about converting my fruiting chamber into a poor mans pod and birthing the casings to be fruited as flat cakes in a last ditch effort.

The casings are obviously suffering in some way, they show signs of bruising in spots and in places where they are weeping waste product so much has been put out that the mycelia is saturated with that amber/yellow liquid.

Is going this route worth trying? Cakes have always been much easier for me, given that these represent the last the spores I have on hand I'd really like to salvage something. If anyone else has tries this and can let me know if it worked out I'd be grateful.

Changes in humidity? what for? you shouldnt?t change nothing till pins show, and you don?t even need to do so if you keep a constant 95% rh.

I did once something similar with a casing. I dunked it, then muffled it in verm and put it to fruit. It pinned nicely, but keep a high rh.

It works

I'm going to try it. To answer your question about changes in humidity, at various points the RH was lower and higher than the ideal, so things were either to wet or to dry.

Any tips on rehydrating the casings before doing this?
