FIRST TIMER (Condensation)
#28781323 - 05/20/24 02:19 PM (1 month, 6 days ago) |

I have four 3lb. bags and one in particular has been massively condensating and causing major concern due to my eager enthusiasm in being successful in the 4/4 strains I have inoculated. The others have SOME condensation that seem to be caused by the obvious growth. I've done a few B&S (I know I shouldn't but I'm impulsive, impatient, and fascinated.) I keep my temps as regulated as I can (70°-75°). Any help would be appreciated!

A few break and shake? Like multiple times on the same bag? What did you inoculate with? Not a whole lot you can do about the moisture content of the bag now.
My best advice is to leave them alone. Everytime you pick the bag up and move it around you are causing tears in the mycelium and retarding it's growth. Mycelium is resilient and always trys to recover, but outside of a single break and shake at 20-30% colonization it is just slowing down growth and causing stress.

Yeahh I've B&S all 4 a few times.😬 I inoculated with ITW spore syringes. (Golden Teacher, Amazonian Cubensis, Stargazers, and Blue Meanies.) They're doing well but the moisture was a concern. I'll make efforts not to touch them for sure tho! Thank you!

Another note. Ideally anything other than PF Tek cakes should be inoculated with clean liquid culture. Even the best spore syringes will have some level of contamination. That contamination will compete against your mycelium and may ruin your efforts at a harvest.
To inoculate a spawn bag you would first want to put spore to agar to achieve a clean culture. This may take a few agar transfers to clean up any molds or bacteria. Then you can either inoculate the bag with agar wedges (requires very good sterile technique) or use that clean agar to make clean liquid culture. Either way you will at a minimum want a still air box. These can be made very cheaply from a plastic tote.
I would recommend that you read the hitchhiker guide. hitchhikers guide It will save you months of trial and error and many heart breaking mistakes. After reading that my advice would be to try your hand at PF Tek if you haven't already and get started on learning agar. Very few of the grows you will see on this forum would be possible without agar.

If you've broke it up and redistributed the grain 'a few times' and it's still not fully colonized, something is seriously wrong. Take some decent pictures of the contents of the bags if you want advice on the health of whats in them. Nobody can tell whats going on through that picture.
The bag with lots of condensation is probably contaminated.

I hope these are better pics. I only inoculated approximately 2 weeks ago. I moved the one in question to another location. I also hadn't realized that they shouldn't be too close together due to the heat they put off while growing in such a closed space. The other 3 have a decent amount of condensation themselves now but they're also colonizing vigorously. Forgive my ignorance, I appreciate the help!

My phone doesn't take the best pictures. Aside from the moisture occuring (it's just droplets, no pooling) Its a clean white myc with no signs of contamination or anything. My set up isn't ideal with how hot it's been where I'm at but I set a small fan up to cool the area throughout the day. It's seemed to help. Except for the loss of my Amazonians.😮💨I'll see if I can't get one of my more photo-inclined friends to get good images.

I'd top fruit those and not shake at all. Not gonna lie, they look pretty cursed. Bacterial AF at the very best is my take on this
First/second pics look like they might not be THAT bad, but still baccy and overly wet
I'm not sure you can get anything out of 3rd and fourth

That's sad... I appreciate the looking out! I'll also look into top fruiting is there anyway to fix that for the first one? I used shroomtek bags because it said it'd be easy for a first timer. I'm guessing my temperature conditions and my constant handling did me in...

Don't overlook the fact that you shot spores into grain. MuffinMan gave some great advice. Spore syringes are inherently dirty and will always have a decent chance to contam a bag like this. Agar is you friend for ensuring clean grows

Right. I should've just followed the pile of books I've been reading but was worried about my competence in the trials. I appreciate the help for sure. Can some explain what they meant by top fruiting??

Since it seems you have coir in those bags, just get them into fruiting conditions and don't touch them. Otherwise, you usually get some coir to field capacity and throw it on top.
Read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Shroomery. It has everything you need to grow shrooms with great success.

I see what you did there.
