Transfer from Jar to Agar to Save Spores
    #28777095 - 05/17/24 01:41 AM (1 month, 12 days ago)

I think I messed up my PF Tek jars. I mixed the verm and BRF first, then added the water. I mixed it up really well, but had to add another 1/2 cup of water to get it to field capacity so a couple drop of water would come out. I already put spores into the jars and 10 days in they all show signs of growth with no contams yet I think, but the brf/verm mixture looks to thick and wet and I'm concerned there isn't enough space for the mycelium to spread out properly. I've been doing some research on this and it sounds like I need to get the verm only to field capacity before mixing in the BRF.

I'd like to take one or two of the jars and try to pull some healthy growth out and put it on agar so I can save the spores for another run in case it doesn't colonize. Has anyone done this and do you have any advice?

I assume I would slowly pour the verm off the jar in a SAB, then dump the jar and pull a little piece of growth off and drop it in the middle of an agar plate. Then do more transfers as needed to clean it up?

You don’t need to get it to field capacity with pf tek, you’re thinking of when you go to bulk with coir, definitely too much water, best if you just stick to the exact measurements for pf tek.
You can definitely transfer growth from jars to other media.

Awesome, that's helpful. I will just use the exact measurements on the next round. I'm going to let some of the jars go for a couple weeks just to see what they do, but I think they're all throw aways unfortunately.
